Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle loose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf unit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing.
