Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

It has been refinished in a medium to satin sheen gloss dark reddish-brown mahogany stain. This desk has hand-cut dovetails across the top, like the early construction desks do, a breadboard writing surface that opens up to reveal two slide supports and a gorgeous interior with curved dovetail drawers, a raised beveled center door and center column drawers. It even has a key. The base has curved front drawers with wooden knobs, all dovetail, and the pillar drawers across the top, which means there are two smaller drawers across the base and three drawers in the bottom. There are also heavy-duty detailed claw feet. The overall size is 36 inches wide, 21 inches at the deepest point, and 42 inches high. The writing lid is 31 inches from the floor when opened, and the lid itself is 34 inches wide and 15 inches deep.
