The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Charles Scribner's Sons(1955) 248 pages. Except as noted immediately f

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Extraordinary. Exceptionally ... moreWell Preserved Genuine Ancient Chinese Earthenware Jar; Wine Storage Decanter(Hu” BC200. Perfect for a dried flower display. CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Han Dynasty(206 B.C. to 220 A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 175 millimeters(7 inches) Breadth: 195 millimeters(7 3/4 inches) Depth: 139 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) Diameter: 92 millimeters(3 2/3 inches) at top lip; 85* 73 millimeters(3 3/8* 2 7/8 inches) at base. CONDITION: Exceptionally good! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps. Chips, and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial since ancient times. All quite normal for a 2,000 year old vase. DETAIL: A splendid. Exceptionally well preserved large sized earthenware jar from the Han Dynasty of Ancient China. The jar is the size of a large melon(like a cantaloupe) What’s really remarkable is that it is ostensibly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings, chips and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are as well the normal blemishes(bumps and pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is quite possible that this specimen is much older. It’s also equally likely that this piece is a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other cera
