A ROMAN GLASS FRAGMENT SET IN A 14 CARAT GOLD PENDANT THE PENDANT WAS HAND MADE BY A YEMENITE JEWELLER WORKING IN ISRAEL. The gold frame is worked around the natural shape of the roman glass and is fit by hand to that shape so creating a UNIQUE piece of art work. THIS ARTIST IS STILLL WORKING TODAY USING THE CLASSIC 2.000 YEAR OLD YEMENITE TECHNIQUE. The roman glass fragment was part of a cosmetic vessel dating back to the roman period in Israel i.e 2nd.3rd. century AD. Glass is made mainly of sand and silica but too includes traces of metals and minerals: with time. A rare Roman mould-made double head shaped bottle of transparent manganese colored. Slightly pinkish-purple glass. The vessel has a slightly everted rim that is rolled inward, a tubular neck with a small bulge above the edge of the mould, and a body in the shape of a double head. The base is roughly oval and flat though somewhat irregular, causing the vessel to stand at a slight tilt. The two heads have similar chubby, child0like features, possibly representing Eros or Dionysus, with ample hair that appears curly and is pulled back from the face. The seam for the two-part mould is particularly noticeable down the middle of the hair on one side.
