Late Roman and Medieval Islamic CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Syria through Medieval Islamic Palestine DATE: Circa 400- 1100 AD DIMENSIONS: 9.8 cm(3.85 in. long for the largest example DESCRIPTION: Although it has much in common with later Byzantine and early Islamic types. The first example in this group is a late Roman import to the Levant from Egypt. It is formed of pink clay with remains of a red slip, has a spike handle, rests on a raised circular base and is decorated with concentric circles and radiating short strokes. A hairline crack around the body reveals where the upper and lower half of the lamp were joined during manufacture. Otherwise intact but with heavy encrustation. Also, a Medieval Islamic wheel made lamp of buff clay on a circular base, no decoration, fill hole at top center of the raised ... morediscus and wick hole in the shoulder below. Intact but for a minor chip at the rear. And a late Roman example from Syria, formed of buff clay with traces of a red slip. It has a high square handle decorated with circle and dot design on the front and vertical lines on the back, geometric and repeating stroke decoration around the fill hole, in the channel and on the shoulders, and circle and dot decoration inside the slightly raised circular base. Intact and free of encrustation. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection. Assembled by a United Nations staffer while working in the Middle East in the mid-1960s, thence by descent to the most recent owner. COMPARISONS: For the first example. J.W.
