Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 373 pages. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2003) ISBN: 0142003697. In 1508. Despite ... morestrong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter(though famed for his sculpture David) Michelangeo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling recounts the four extraordinary years Michelangelo spent laboring over the vast ceiling while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Battling against ill health, financial difficulties, domestic problems, the pope's impatience, and a bitter rivalry with the brilliant young painter Raphael, Michelangelo created scenes so beautiful that they are considered to be among the greatest masterpieces of all time. A panorama of illustrious figures converged around the creation of this magnificent work, from the great Dutch scholar Erasmus to the young Martin Luther. Ross King skillfully weaves them through his compelling historical narrative, offering uncommon insight into the intersection of art and history. CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished except VERY slight edge/corner wear and rubbing to the covers. Just the normal slight wear expected in a new book caused by the book being shelved next to others. VERY minimal wear consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Satisfaction guaranteed. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: King tells how Michelangelo Buonarroti. Known as a sculptor not as a painter, spent four years painting the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II while power politics and personal rivalries swirled around him. What lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise was to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Sumerians, and Babylonians; jade was to the ancient Chinese. It was the gemstone of gemstones, it’s name synonymous with“gold” in other languages. Good as gold” the golden age” such expressions would have used the word“yu” for jade, rather than the word gold. This pendant seems to have two“faces” to it. With the point(the narrow end) on the bottom it seems to be a stylized face. But with the point at the top, as it seemingly would have intended to be worn, it seems to depict two figures, back to back, sitting beneath a tree. Genuine Ancient Christian Ring From Late Antiquity
An outstanding and unique ancient relic from the earliest days of Christianity. Found by a metal detectorist in northern Greece. It features an angel facing right, and holding a staff with loop& cross. This item dates to the 3rd or 4th century; a time when Roman persecution of early believers was still prevalent throughout the empire. Size: approx. 6.5. The bezel is made of bronze. The band appears to be a replacement& is made of copper. An absolutely unique and one of a kind conversation piece. Condition is as appears in the photographs. The imagery is worn& faded. But this is common in metal items which have been buried for almost two thousand years. Clean, intact& wearable, if desired. The small amount of patina remaining on the inside of the band is a testament to the authenticity of this item, is removable if desired. ... moreA fine addition to any collection of ancient religious jewelry& one which would make a unique a gift for any Christian.
Ancient RARE Israelite Samaritan Ring With A Depiction of Mt. Gerizim 200-300AD
The Judeans(Israelites) History The Samaritans are an ethnoreligious group of the Levant. Descended from ancient Semitic inhabitants of the region. Religiously the Samaritans are adherents of Samaritanism, an Abrahamic religion closely related to Judaism. Based on the Samaritan Torah,Samaritans assert their worship is the true religion of the ancient Israelites prior to the Babylonian Exile, preserved by those who remained in the Land of Israel, as opposed to Judaism, which they assert is a related but altered and amended religion, brought back by those returning from the Babylonian exile. Ancestrally. Samaritans claim descent from the Israelite tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh(the two sons of Joseph(son of Jacob) as well as from the priestly tribe of Levi, who have links to ancient Samaria from the period of their entry into the land of Canaan, ... morewhile some suggest that it was from the beginning of the Babylonian Exile up to the Samaritan polity of Baba Rabba. Samaritans used to include a line of Benjamin tribe, but it went extinct during the decline period of the Samaritan demographics. A Samaritan sits upon his camel among shrubs; a palm tree behind him. And a constructed dwelling before him; as he watches the luminous sun rise brightly from behind Mt. Gerizim. Slowly warming the earth. The mountain is sacred to the Samaritans who regard it as having been the location chosen by Yahweh for a holy temple, and continues to be the center of Samaritan religion to this day. Recent Dead Sea Scrolls work supports the accuracy of the Samaritan Pentateuch's designation of Mount Gerizim rather than Mount Ebal as the sacred site. The light earthen patina retained from the ea

CONDITION: Very Good! Completely intact. Only moderate wear evidenced. And only very mild porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A nicely crafted and fairly sophisticated ancient Roman bronze ring circa ... morefourth century A.D. As you can see. The design is quite sturdy, with heavy bands and thick bezel, and the ring is very handsome character. The"bezel" or center part of this ring depicts a starburst; over which is superimposed a very distinct cross. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. and the starburst design engraved into the surface of this bezel is done very nicely. Many of the starburst designs were actually enhanced cross designs known as a“stellata cross” amongst other variants. Though the starburst design was a classic and typical(pagan) Roman theme. It was eventually co-opted by the ancient Christians. By the fourth century A.D. the cross element was generally more accentuated than is the case with this specimen, and was known as a“stellata” This particular specimen is a very close precursor to the fourth century stellata, though in some later examples the cross was a little more of a cross and a little less of a star. To either side of the bezel are raised shoulders, created by building up the band on either side of the bezel. It gives the ring a sculpted look
Ancient Roman Era Holy Land Palestine Ring Monkey Head Skull (#5427)
Antiquity Antique monkey or skull ring from the late Roman era circa 300 found in the Holy Land/ Israel. Measurements: Approximately US size 6. Weighs 1-2 grams. Ruler in'photos is in inches. Metal is oxidised as is natural for an item of this age. Possibly oxidised silver or iron. A simple round shank. Broadening slightly at the shoulders, supports a monkey head, something like a skull. The back of the head like a scalloped shell. A collar around the neck. Fascinating in every way. The design is tremendously interesting and the survival of something so delicate for over 1800 years is astonishing. Marks: none. Condition: the metal is oxidised. As previously mentioned. No damage found. Notes: Monkeys are not indigenous to Palestine/ ancient Israel. But images/ artistic representations of them indicate that they were brought into the region, ... morefrom either Egypt or the East. In Ancient Rome at the time, monkeys were used as pets and often dressed as soldiers to be pulled in small chariots by goats. Their images are also found on vessels of the time, but the significance is not clear. The man who sold me this ring told me that he has seen monkey rings from the Israel/Palestine area once or twice before, but he also does not know what their significance is.
