Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. A rare and genuine. Ancient Near Eastern Terracotta jug, dating to the 1st millennium B.C. With rounded base and globular body with wide. Cylindrical neck. The piece decorated with added pellets of clay and with two lug handles positioned bilaterally. A beautifully shaped vessel. And fascinating display piece. Height: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Small area of base reattached and associated infill. Age related encrustation. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his ... morefather, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) And Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledge and collections grew to encompass antiquities, ethnographic art, glass, paintings and fossils. Also noted for his restoration skills, Huffener was much respected in his field, coming to befriend Herbert Reiser, one of the world's leading collectors. A short pottery bottle with a closed form body that reduces itself to a narrow neck and an outcurving rim inflection; Everted rim profile and a flat base. Please Note: Not A Replica! My other oil lamp from Jerusalem(priced at $79.49) is a very nice example of an established oil lamp style that you will find in ancient oil lamp reference books. Call it the standard production model. However. This authentic oil lamp is indeed extremely rare. It would have been CUSTOM made for the wealthy by a local artist in the Jerusalem area. To be a documented/referenced oil lamp(like my other oil lamp) large numbers of the same/similar oil vessels are required to be cataloged in order to be listed in a reference book. I venture to say that this specific Jerusalem oil lamp is one of a kind as there is no other documented oil lamp that is similar. Note the carvings around the oil lamp. The pictures do not do it justice. You should be able to recognize a number of ostriches circling the sides of the lamp. On ... morethe top is a sun dial that would have been used during the day to keep track of the relative time. The Arabic name al-Karak derives from Aramaic karka"the walled town. City" the root krk, meaning"to circumvent; to enclose. is peculiar to Aramaic. The name of the site in the Hellenistic-Roman-Byzantine periods was Karakmoba"the fortress-city of Moab. attested, in various spellings( Charach- Charak- since Claudius Ptolemaeus(middle of 2d century A.D. cf.
