It is framed in silver and has wood shavings and carvings enclosed within transparent mica. The details are astonishing. The wood is probably from Jerusalem, and the ancient writing on the back is likely Greek. The wood shavings are inside because those who would make pilgrimages to the Holy Land would buy these. The crosses were from the area of the mount of Olives where Jesus was crucified. Therefore, the wood was considered miraculous and sacred and these crosses were considered so sacred that it was sacrilege and a sin to throw any of the shavings out as though they were from any ordinary wood.
