Oil lamps provided a light source to every household, and were made of a coarse, porous, unglazed baked clay called terra cotta. The lamps were a major commodity in the Middle East and Europe. Their color varied from dull ochre to bright red. The basic shape remained the same for over a thousand years. This particular lamp has fantastic. A rare Roman mould-made double head shaped bottle of transparent manganese colored. Slightly pinkish-purple glass. The vessel has a slightly everted rim that is rolled inward, a tubular neck with a small bulge above the edge of the mould, and a body in the shape of a double head. The base is roughly oval and flat though somewhat irregular, causing the vessel to stand at a slight tilt. The two heads have similar chubby, child0like features, possibly representing Eros or Dionysus, with ample hair that appears curly and is pulled back from the face. The seam for the two-part mould is particularly noticeable down the middle of the hair on one side.
