Tang Dynasty, 8th or 9th Century A.D. Possibly a Ming Dynasty or 18th or 19th Century Qing Dynasty Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Tang Dynasty statuary. Sancai. Or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master. In early Tang dynasty. But Most Likely an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 195 millimeters(7 7/8 inches) at top lip; 65 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) at base. Height: 89 millimeters(3 5/8 inches) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. There is one rim chip which was repaired by one of our conservators(visible as an unglazed spot along the rim) Normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. Rare Ancient Near Eastern Holy Land Pottery Jug 1st Millennium B.C.
A rare and genuine. Ancient Near Eastern Terracotta jug, dating to the 1st millennium B.C. With rounded base and globular body with wide. Cylindrical neck. The piece decorated with added pellets of clay and with two lug handles positioned bilaterally. A beautifully shaped vessel. And fascinating display piece. Height: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Small area of base reattached and associated infill. Age related encrustation. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his ... morefather, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) And Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998.
