Oil lamps provided a light source to every household, and were made of a coarse, porous, unglazed baked clay called terra cotta. The lamps were a major commodity in the Middle East and Europe. Amazing Ancient 1st -3rd Century Museum Quality Stone Inkwell MUST SEE
Offered for sale is what I believe to be a 1st-3rd century AD stone inkwell. I have seen similar inkwells in museum collections. However not exact. The ones that I have seen were Roman. This incredible piece was just picked out of an early Maine estate attic. This probably came out of a tomb in the late 1800's. I am not an expert, but have been dealing with antiques for close to 40 years and don't think I have ever had anything this old. The inkwell is carved out of stone. It measures 2" tall 1 3/4" by 1 3/4" One side has carved into it the roman numerals LI, another side has some initials, and one side has dot's, maybe representing stars. Guaranteed old and original!
