RARE- LARGE ROMAN IRON SPEARHEAD(18) The present financial climate of the economy has regretfully forced me to reduce my collection of artefacts and coins. This is one of those items. The spearhead was found on a predominantly Roman site on an East Yorkshire field in 2002. It is a narrow conical socketed leaf shaped iron spearhead with a slightly pronounced central nervure. Circa 1 st to 3 rd century AD. The spearhead is in remarkably well preserved condition. But it does possess the usual time aged blistering effect, normal for an iron object of this era. There are two areas that exhibit damage. The tip of the blade and a small aged nick, present on the edge of the blade; otherwise the spearhead is intact with no repair work or restoration. Cosmetically the spearhead is well presented and not affected in terms of shape deformation caused ... moreby plough damage or excessive surface pitting and aggressive oxidation. The authentic spearhead measures a lengthy 335mm(13⅛˝) in length. The blade width is 48mm(1⅞˝) and the internal diameter of the socket is 16mm(⅝˝) A beautiful example of an ancient artefact of war. The spearhead in this listing was bought as an original. But extensive later research states that the originals are in The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Information from"Israel Exploration Journal. Volume 13, Number 4, Jerusalem, Israel, 1963" by Ruth Hestrin and Miriam Tadmor can be seen in the pictures above. The journal has numerous pages of drawings and the following information: The hoard comprised 35 tools and weapons. Some beads, fragments of sheet silver, and many hundreds of small ridged copper plates. The tools included axes, adzes, chisels, a peg, a saw, one short and flat knife, and two long and curved knives; the weapons were daggers, spear-heads, and one mace-head. Page 279. Spear-heads(Figs. 10:3, 11: P. 29 A.D. This is the most remarkable group among the Monash finds. The four spear-heads are powerful weapons. Found in the north of England by a detectorist. This is a complete socketed type spear head, it is most likely to be Viking in origin but it could also be Saxon. I am estimating a date for this as C10-11th, it is sound condition, the metal is stable and doesnt flake when handled. There is a little degredation to the edges but it's complete and original with no restoration, the length is@ 12 inches. This is a large leaf shaped spearhead that is 3 7/8" long and 1 3/4" wide, and it is only 1/4" at the thickest point. This auction is for fine older spearhead spear tip probably from Somalia. Very finely made. Typical for Somali weapons. This spearhead features a broad leaf-shaped blade with a nearly flat cross-section(not offset like many African blades) The socket/ferrule is well-made with an open seam and some evidence of the shaft with glue remaining. Some decoration in the form of a small collar with a chiseled decoration. Still quite sharp. Minor issues: very tip is damaged from an impact and there is a forging flaw on the socket. This auction is for a very unusual African ALUMINUM spear or lance tip. A blunt item not made for combat. Probably a prestige or processional item with symbolic significance. Aluminum shows up a lot in West African weapons. Maybe because it was rare in the region or because it stays shiny. I do not know the origin of this item but it seems to resemble Tuareg blades from Mali and neighboring countries. Numerous decorative elements including dots, file work, punched designs etc. that look Tuareg. Was obtained with some copper currency blades that might also be Tuareg(they have the same punched dot pattern) It is certainly West African. Thin and obviously hammered out and shaped by hand.
