A farmer, shown wearing a short tunic, is depicted standing beneath a date palm, pulling a branch down towards the ground to collect the thick bunches of fruit. A bird is shown nestled into the foliage on the left, enjoying the sweet fruit, whilst a goat stands expectantly at the base of the tree, possibly hoping to profit from some of the dates shaken loose. A popular theme of roundels from the Byzantine period were Biblical narratives. Islamic Palestine DATE: 3rd- 8 th Century AD DIMENSIONS: 9 cm(3.54 in. long for the largest example DESCRIPTION: The largest lamp in this group is an Early Islamic type made from pink clay with a well preserved brown-red slip. It features a slipper shaped body on slightly raised ring base. Spike handle, vertical ribbing over the shoulders and enclosed channel from the fill hole to the nozzle, decorated inside with a Greek letter A. Intact. The round lamp is a Byzantine type, probably from northern Syria. Formed of pale buff clay, it is decorated with scrolls of foliage and bunches of grapes, with a zig-zag and dot pattern on the shoulder. The ring base is decorated with a star burst of four intersecting lines. The lamp has a spike handle ... moreand is intact but for a chip on one side. This group of people includes the Greeks, Romans, Jews, Early Christians, Egyptians, Muslims, Syrians, North Africans, Celts, Gauls, Britains, and even some early Crusaders. The time period for oil lamps is approximately from 300 BC through 900 AD. Generally they are thought of as Roman or early Islamic oil lamps. The examples here are earthenware ceramic or clay lamps. Oil lamps were also made in various metals and in glass. The traditional Roman technique for making clay lamps was to press the raw clay into gypsum molds. The two halves of the lamp were put together and the two holes were made. The green ware was then trimmed by hand using small metal tools and then fired in an oven. More expensive oil lamps had glazes applied in the firing step. These RARE AND UNIQUE artifacts would be a wonderful center piece to any collection. Ancient Religious Clay Oil Lamp, Late Roman-Early Byzantine, Uncommon
This roundish lamp features frond patterns on the top with small bumps around the center hole. The small handle is intact. There is a distinct maker's mark on the bottom. One chip on the rim counterclockwise of the handle otherwise in very nice condition. Measures at just under 3 1/4" in length. Late Roman and Byzantine/ Islamic CULTURE/REGION OF ORIGIN: Late Roman Syria and Byzantine/ Islamic Transitional Palestine DATE: Circa 400- 750 AD DIMENSIONS: 9.7 cm(3.82 in. long for the slightly larger(Late Roman) example DESCRIPTION: The late Roman example is formed of buff to pink clay and has a high squared handle decorated with vertical lines in a square. While the area around the fill hole is decorated with short strokes radiating from a circle around the hole. The slightly raised circular base is plain. Intact, with soot at the wick hole from use and a thin layer of sandy encrustation all over. The other lamp, while exhibiting all characteristics of early Islamic slipper shaped lamps with spike handles and the usual geometric and cross hatch surface decoration, is decorated inside the slightly raised circular ... morebase with a cross in high relief, suggesting that it was made for use in a Christian context during this transitional period. It is made of pink clay and is also intact, with minimal encrustation. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection. Byzantine and Islamic Palestine DATE: Circa 300- 750 AD DIMENSIONS: 9.8 cm(3.85 in. long for the largest(late Roman) example DESCRIPTION: First in this group is a late Roman example from Syria. Formed of pinkish buff clay with traces of a reddish slip, featuring a high squared handle decorated with linear patterns, and a combination of linear, geometric and palm leaf patterns on the shoulders and around the gill hole and wick hole. The slightly raised circular base is decorated with five circle and dot decorations arranged in what could be construed as a cross shaped pattern. Intact with only light encrustation. The Byzantine lamp is from late in Byzantine period and shows the early development of the slipper shape that became common ... morein the Islamic period. It is formed of pink clay with traces of a red slip, features a spike handle and is decorated on the shoulders with vegetal patterns and in the channel between the fill and wick holes with an elaborate cross resembling a Greek Chi-Rho symbol in low relief. The base is plain. Intact but with encrustation and surface flaking obscuring some of the decoration. The final example is early Islamic and formed of fine pink clay. It has a rounded slipper shape, spike handle and is decorated on the shoulders with high relief vertical lines. It rests on a slightly raised circular base, has soot stains around the wick hole from use and is intact. PROVENANCE: Formerly in a Colorado private collection. Lot of two(2) Byzantine(possibly Ancient Roman or even earlier) bronze coin weights. Weighing 4.0 grams each. The first is rectangular, measuring 16x19 mm and appears to have a K incised or pressed on its surface; the other is 13 mm round and slightly biconical, with a rim line and central dot incised into each side. Wonderful pieces of ancient history; I welcome additional information from collectors or dealers who specialize in this area. ROMAN BYZANTINE OIL LAMP ISRAEL ARCHAEOLOGY
Here is an original oil lamp that dates to between 220AD and 640AD. I purchased this relic from a highly respected archeological dealer in Jerusalem in 1976. It comes in a beautiful olive wood presentation box along with a nail I rescued from a cell in Acco(Acre) prison near Haifa. The lamp is in perfect condition as is the box it comes in. The lamp is 3 5/8 inches long. Here is your chance to get a treasure from the Holy Land without sitting on an El Al flight for 15 hours. This is not a replica. It was excavated in Israel.
