Staffordshire Childs Red Teapot PUNCH& JUDY Charles Allerton& Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This is a whimsical childs transfer printed teapot. Circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's miniature tea set, the teapot is round, melon shaped and stands about 5 1/2" tall to the top of the fancy finial with a scalloped rim and applied handle. The color is a rich cherry or country red. The teapot features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show(dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch. Judy and baby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. The images is repeated on each side of the pot. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. The handles have a geometric-floral border trim. The pattern name is"Punch" It was made ... moreby Charles Allerton& Sons. A pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The teapot is marked with C Allerton& Sons England and the pattern name. This teapot has seen better days and is in only fair condition. The handle has been broken off and reglued. The lid is missing its finial and has a hairline. And though fitting perfectly, the border trim is from a different Allerton pattern. Discoloration on lid, overally glaze crazing consistent with age. The workmanship is haphazard. Which is one of the reasons many people collect it.not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not all aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as is. Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after. Originally part of a complete miniature doll's dinner service. A nice doll size, the tiny tureen measures 2 3/4" across the top rim and stands 3/4" high. The piece is transfer printed in rich and earthy brown against a creamy earthenware blank. Imaginatively decorated with an ABC or alphabet school chart beside a dressed monkey teacher reading a book to 2 dressed donkey or ass pupils. The characters are probably taken from the art of Granville, a satirical comic artist known for his anthropomorphic animals. The pattern name is"Polichinelle" the French name for the main character of Pulcinella, the original Punch and Judy puppet show. This stunning piece is an uncommon ... moreform of 19th Century miniature French transferware. Much like the transfer printed childrens wares from Staffordshire England. This pattern is commonly attributed to Keller& Guerin one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France c1890. The tureen has no maker’s marks. The nappy is in great condition with enlarged stilt marks on the top rim. Original to the firing process, and no other chips cracks or repairs. Minor typical transfer imperfections and glaze ponding, adding to the authenticity and charm of this tiny serving piece. And elegantly simple, with clean lines and modest details, a studied contrast to some of the busy and highly decorated ceramics of the period. The set is marked with the Stone China brand name and the name of the maker J& E maker. It was made in the mid to late 19th century. In the Staffordshire region of England, possibly it is of American origin. The set has 12 pieces(14 including lids) is comprised of: Teapot with Lid. 5" tall, 4 1/2" long· Sugar Box or Biscuit Jar with Lid. 4 1/2" tall· Cream pitcher or milk jug. 4” tall· Three cups. 2 1/4” tall; Three saucers. 5” in diameter; and· Three plates. 5 1/2” in diameter The set is in great condition. Child's Red Transferware Deep Waste Bowl SPORTING ANIMALS Staffordshire. England c. 1850 This spectacular miniature transferware waste bowl or deep porridge bowl. Circa 1850, was originally part of a complete children's tea or dinner service. Somewhat crudely made like much of the children's wares of the period, the original tea set was made of earthenware and decorated in a rich and cheery red with wonderful illustrations wild sporting animals from Africa and India. The bowl stands 2 1/2" tall and measures 4" across the top rim. The bowl features 2 detailed transfers. Depicting an Antelope and an Indian Goat. The source prints are recognizable from the copperplate engravings of Buffon and other early natural scientists. Other pieces in the original set depicted a Royal Tiger, Black Panther, Black Bear, Beaver, Goat, ... moreKoo-Doo, Leopard, Common Fox, and a rather frightening looking Aard Wolf. The bowl is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire region of England c. 1850. The pattern name and maker is unknown. A set with this pattern is illustrated on page 78 Lorraine Punchard's"Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the United Kingdom& United States" The bowl is in very good condition. With a superficial fracture on the foot rim and no chips, cracks or repairs. Enlarged stilt marks, original to the making. Light overall crazing consistent with age. This little piece was crude in the making with the usual imperfections, but the transfers were printed with great attention to detail. It is amazing that this little bowl made for a child(probably a boy) so long ago! Childrens early transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The colorful transfers are absolutely captivating. The set will make a rare addition to any collection of children's dishes or a sporting and hunting collection. Offered for auction is wonderful Staffordshire brown& white childs transferware tea set. The scene is of a young girl named Mae sitting on her porch stoop with her pets. She has a kitten on her lap. A dog sitting& waiting in front of her and a cat drinking milk on the ground next to her. There are birds in the trees. This set was made by Charles Allerton& Sons in 1888. The pieces are marked with quite a few different marks but they are all from the same maker. You are bidding on 5 plates, 5 cups and 5 saucers. They are all in very good condition with no chips cracks or repairs. One plate is stained probably from coffee or tea being left on it. You can see it in picture# 4. These pieces were made for children and as such have flaws. Up for bid is a lovely rare in this size childs baby chest used to store their dolls and clothing etc. This is hand made just like the large style used by adults. It is in its original condition including a victorian postcard decoration in the cover portion of the trunk. The leather straps are present and in tact-the only think I can see is that the top half of the right hand closure is missing. Please see the pictures. Up for auction is this darling antique Campbell Kids soup bowl manufactured by the Buffalo Pottery Co in the early 1900's. Signed by the artist GG Drayton. It measures 7 3/4 in wide. 6 1/4 diameter inside. It is 1 1/4 in in height, 3/4 inch depth inside. It has some signs of it's advanced age, some discoloration, some gold loss, there is a hairline in the glaze which can be felt with the fingernail(see pic) No chips.
