This is a beautiful and rare antique period American birdseye chest of drawers which is probably 1830s in age. The chest is unsigned but attributed to John Needles of Baltimore who was a famous cabinet maker back then. It measures 41 inches in height. The top is 49.5x19.5 inches. It is original finish and very clean. I believe the pulls are original as well. It is well made and a beautiful chest with the pronounced birds eye drawer fronts. It is well made which is how the old cabinet makers used to make them. Due to the size of this piece it either needs to be picked up here on Cape Cod or it must be shipped freight at the cost of the purchaser. We can recommend a couple of freight shippers on the east coast who do a very nice job for a reasonable price. However shipping west of the Mississippi can cause a jump in the freight price so please keep that in mind when bidding. The dresser is 27 1/2” tall(from the floor to top of dresser) and 42" wide, with a depth of 22" front to back. Overall height from the floor to top of mirror frame is 72" The top 2 drawers are 5” deep while the bottom drawer is 7” deep. In one of the drawers, a label indicates that the dresser is of“Warren Quality” Since the dresser was used for 50 years in two homes located 40 miles from Warren PA before being moved to Pittsburgh 40 years ago, we believe that it was probably made in Warren. This chest has the highest craftsmanship employing cockbead molded drawers. A turret shaped top, solid Tiger maple sides, solid tiger maple formed apron and solid tiger maple gallery. The fronts of the chest are all executed in Birds Eye Maple. It has the very best done carved, turned, tapered and scribed fully formed columns and legs. ... moreThe drawers are all done with blind boxed dove tail sets which was the very highest possible form of cabinetry and joinery. The chest has all its original glue blocks and is absolutely structurally wonderful. It's nothing less than every ounce of spectacular. The top drawer is laid out with dividers, all the secondaries are wonderfully oxidized white wide old growth pine solid panels showing great hand hewn and tools marks. We observed what may be a veneer restoration to the right side of the top drawer. This is also very likely to be simply how it was made or a splitting of a veneer being addressed by the craftsman who made it. We see no other evidence of any alterations on the chest so we suspect it was a case of the later. The sides of the case are very nicely shaped all flowing with the front apron. This chest is accented by wonderful brass embossed rosettes on its back galley. The period brass pulls are most wonderful and everything they should be when decorating a chest like this. Birds-Eye Maple Dresser Set 47 x 18.5, Adjustable Piano Stool 14 in. diameter
This is a beautiful Birds-Eye Antique Dresser Set. England Import. It's 47 inches from left to right across longest part. Front to back measurement of the surface is about 18.5 inches from mirror to edge. It's 30 inches deep when measured from floor to flat surface. There is a mirror that has no visible flaws or scratches which is attached. One picture above has a pic of the back of the mirror. There is a Piano Stool that is adjustable. It's 14 inches in diameter(round) 19 inches from floor to seat which is adjustable. It's also made of wood. If you look close you can see the little swirls in the flat surface which is how it got the name Birds-Eye which is what the little natural wood swirls look like up close.
