When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form nearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. For decorators passionate about the French Louis XV form, this is a wonderful find. Measurements: 39 1/2" wide x 23 7/8" deep x 29 1/4" high to top of desk; 24 1/8" high to underside of drawer(when sitting) Condition Report: Light dings and chips throughout. |. |. Fantastic Marquetry Bureau Plat Writing Table, An absolutely fantastic walnut writing table reminiscent of the Louis XV style. Fantastically ornate and profusely adorned with ormolu mounts. This looks like a piece that you would find in a French royal chateau or a Russian Imperial palace. The writing table features an attractive leather top and beautiful classical inlaid floral marquetry work that is certainly the work of a third generation master craftsman. Absolutely beautiful true Victorian bureau/dresser top mirror. It appears to be made of either rosewood or mahogany. It has a compartment with a double hinged lid at the top of the base. Please look at all pictures as this piece is not in pristine condition. But at the same time, please notice the beautiful carvings throughout. It is in overall good condition and is a true beauty. The side hand carved mirror mounts are supported by threaded wooden bolts and attached by large wooden screws(please note pictures) The oval flat piece that covers the back of the mirror was been replaced many years ago. This appears to be the only non-original piece of this extrodinary item. It measures appx. 26" tall x 24" wide at the base x 10 1/4" at its deepest point of the base. 18th Century Georgian Country Oak banded with Mahogany English 1750-1760 Slant Top Secretary AUTHENTIC! not a Repoduction! Country of Orgin: England. Purchased in 1988 while living in the UK at Antique Dealer in Great Missenden, Buckenhamshire. Have reciept and document of authenticy. AGE: circa 1750- 1760 Georgian Maker: British(could be England. Wales, or Scottland) Style: Slant Front/ Bureau style with three over three large drawers. Unlike other slant ront desks of this era the writting/ front drops down and rests on outside drawers. It does not have pull out blade rails that support the writting surface the pulled out top drawers accomplish that. It has a fitted writting surface of genuine leather( this was a refurbishment some time in the mid 1980's) There are small drawers and cubby holes within and even secret compartments. All ... morebrass hardware is intact however one drawer handle is loose. Bonus hidden cartonnier featuring a well. The cavity beneath a sliding panel, directly behind the writting surface behind the closed doors. Another hidden drawer is behind the closed doors as well. Bracket feet are solid and level. Lock: yet no key Dimensions: height 45" width 37 3/8" depth 19 7/8" Condition: This Country Secretary was built as/ and designed to be a utilitarian Country piece of furniture it is not a highly polished. Unused Hepplewith museum piece. It could use a good cleaning and some very minor restorations. It has miscellanous mars, dings, scratches, wear, shrinkage and separation due to age and use but it all adds to the rich patina of age. It does need a small amount of repair to the mahogany banding on the left front. I don't think this secretary has ever been fully restored. It was a real workhorse at a working country manor house/ estate. Definatly shows some patching and mending from the many years of it's long life. John Collier(who had been the Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1933) at the INSTITUTE ETHNIC AFFAIRS. This letter opener was was thought to have been presented to John Collier by Austin Wilson. A Navajo Indian(who was a silversmith) and given to Doloris by John Collier. A letter opener was something that was given to people of importance. There were some Zuni art work that he had given Doloris. Or perhaps John bought it at the Zuni Tradepost when he was visiting. But usually letter openers were not something commonly sold with jewelry. Austin Wilson had once worked ... morefor the Wallace Silversmith and was a contemporary of Fred Harvey. Vintage 1960 Farm Bureau Safemark Distributor Aluminum Sign
Vintage Farm Bureau Safemark Distributor aluminum sign. This was made around the 1960's and was a tire manufacturer for farm bureau. Safemark is a tire brand sold to members for a discount.They were bought out sometime in the 90's i believe. The sign is made of aluminum and some of the coloring has faded but what is left is really nice color and shine to sign. Eagle was in the middle. Due to the sign material it has held up well. It is not porcelain and the lettering is painted on. All original and no touching has been done. Took sign off a grain drill that is no longer in service except to play dominoes by the farmers. I believe the sign is about 4 feet across and 3 feet high but not exact on the figures. No returns so inspect pics and ask any questions prior to bidding. This a deaccessioned library copy of the 27 th Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology. To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1905-1906, published by the Washington Government Printing Office in 1911, presenting a study of the Omaha Indian Tribe. I am not a book expert. But I would say this example is in excellent condition. The joints and hinges are not cracked, I could find no missing, torn, stained, or damaged pages, some light browning, but no foxing. No after publication markings, except the library markings on the title page. The book is leather bound. In red and black, with raised bands and gold embossed lettering on the spine. The edge of the textblock is lightly marbled, but the top edge has browned. There are 672 numbered pages and 197 illustrations of plates and figures. ~ 1897 PENNSYLVANIA WALL MAP ~ Offered here is an original 1897 railroad wall map of the State of Pennsylvania published by the Bureau of Railroads. The map measures approximately 57” x 37” and it features the routes of all of the railroads that operated in the state during that time including the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Philadelphia Reading, the Lehigh Valley, the Baltimore and Ohio, the Beech Creek, and the Dunkirk and Allegheny. There are some tape stains where the seams were reinforced and some seam splits. Overall though. The map is still in pretty solid condition and would look wonderful displayed in a period frame. Satinwood string inlays and flame mahogany crossbanding adorn the fall, providing a lovely contrast. ... moreEach drawer features hand-cut dovetails and solid brass pulls. The brass escutcheons, while quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks. Each side has developed a separation in the mahogany as part of the wood's natural aging process; these age separations are purely cosmetic and don't affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. The fall has also become uneven over the years and has sustained some wear to the corners but remains, like the rest of this piece, very sturdy. Finally there are a number of minor wear marks and the back feet were also replaced during the restoration. Overall this antique bureau remains in very good condition and would make a fine addition to any home or office furniture collection! This gorgeous mahogany bureau was hand-crafted in Victorian England around the year 1860. This bureau contains plenty of storage space. The sides look great.
