The interior drawers above the writing surface are all functional. When the writing surface is extended, a row of faux drawers is revealed. The drawers on either side of the knee hole are locked until the writing surface is extended slightly and then the mechanism unlocks. Overall this desk is in great condition. There are a few damaged spots in the burled walnut veneer (see pictures), and a couple of splits in some of the side panels (see pictures). All of these blemishes are caused by use and age, and do not affect the function.

This lot comprises a remarkable hand written official copy of. General Order No. 27" Written in September of 1865. The order is addressed to Lt. Thomas Goring a former New York Army Officer then serving in Virginia as an official in the newly created Freedman's Bureau. In no uncertain terms. Goring is ordered to aggressively pursue and arrest imposters within his area of jurisdiction who were attempting to pass themselves off as Government Agents. Goring's orders are that:All persons acting or assuming to act by the Authority of the United States Government in this Sub District without proper credentials or authority.will at once be arrested and sent to these Hd. Qtrs[ Headquarters] for punishment. This order will be strictly enforced by the Officers Comdg. as above, as they are especially charged with its execution. What set ... morethese"Imposters"apart from the run of the mill wave of carpetbaggers then inundating the South was that at this point all positions in the Freedman's Bureau were filled by the Army. So that the impersonators of Bureau personnel were likely wearing Army Uniforms! With the Bureau being composed entirely of military officials. There really were fewif any other possibilities that would explain this order. If the officials were working for organizations like the Christian Commission. For example, they would not be impersonating Government Officials and this order would not apply to them. One can readily understand the Army's frowning on this practice and it zeal in cracking down on anyone who tried to pass themselves off as an Army Officers. And such individuals, if caught doing so, could expect a less than friendly reception if captured. Hand addressed to Lieutenant Goring while an Assistant Superintendant in the Freedman's Bureau in Marion, Va. Goring, to whom this cover is addressed, This cover came from a Group of Goring's letters written between August to October of 1865, dating the cover to that period.
