This marble top dresser/ chest has gorgeous crotch mahogany on the drawer fronts surrounded by beautiful ribbon molding and the original wood pulls. This splendid dresser/ chest measures a total height of 80 inches to the top of the mirror. Height to the top of the marble top glove boxes is 39 inches, height to the marble top center measures 34 inches, a total width of 43 1/2 inches wide and 19 inches deep and weighs approximately 160 lbs. The gorgeous wishbone mirror is framed in crotch mahogany with beaded trim and rests in matching arm supports(old repair on left arm support.see close-up) The width of the mirror frame measures 27 1/2 inches and the old original mirror measures 27 1/2 inches high by 15 1/2 inches wide. The wishbone mirror rests is a turned mahogany slot on top of the center storage drawer flanked by marble top glove box drawers and a drop marble top center.The base offers three large storage drawers each having gorgeous crotch mahogany fronts, wood pulls and beautiful ribbon mahogany trim that encases each drawer. All the drawers have early period dove-tailing, and all the locks are intact but we do not have the key. There are two small spots where the veneer is missing(about 1 inch long on the left side above the second and third drawer) and the left wood pull on the top center drawer has been repaired, also a piece of the vertical ribbon molding is missing on the bottom right side at the base corner. This is a wonderful example of a Classic American Empire Marble Top Chest/ Dresser circa 1840's and is fine quality. Solid and very sturdy and has a commanding presence all of its own! Both pieces have been refinished, but missing veneer work was not done, so, as you can see in pics 4& 8 there is slight edge veneer loss at the front side corners. In pic 5 you can barely see that the veneer has been re-glued. There are a few nicks here and there, and there are hardware circles around a couple of the drawer pulls, where the handles have been rotated and made a circle in the wood around. The hardware, as well as the design, makes this piece much more eye catching, with steel pulls and horizontal rosewood tips on each pull. This piece measures 54" x 32" x 18" deep. Stunning flame mahogany veneers grace the surfaces of this ... morepiece and are decorated with intricate contrasting inlay. An inlay medallion of a lamp has been placed atop the swivelling mirror. Two smaller locking drawers are aligned over four larged drawers. Providing ample storage space. All the drawers are made with high quality dovetail construction. The entire piece is raised off of the ground by short tapered square legs sitting on brass and wood casters. Overall. This piece is in very good condition. There are some drip marks along the top edge of the mirror(from glue or wood finish, see picture) but no cracks or other damage. The wood has some wear associated with age, including chips and minor breakage to the veneers or inlay. See pictures. There is also a chip out of the left side finial and the right top drawer is missing its lock. The wood is cracked around the lock hole on the inside of the drawer. The wheels of the casters do no turn easily and probably need to be oiled. No other breaks or repairs. The dresser stands 70 1/4" tall and is 40" wide and 21" deep. Original marble and mirror and the original early wood ring drawer pulls that are attached with wooden screws and blocks, and the original casters intact on the base. This high quality dresser has early dove-tailed construction on the dresser base top up under the marble and also on the drawer ends; and an old label with an original owners name handwritten with Chicora, SC written below on the base up under the marble. This dresser has a grand, majestic presence with incredible carvings and details; and amazingly left in its original state.you can almost feel the history in this piece when you touch it.incredible!
