Victorian Antique Tiger Maple Dressing Table and mirror
I purchased this piece at Antique Emporium in Modesto. California July 2003. I simply fell in love with it. The receipt I have states it is a"tiger maple dressing table with Cheval Mirror, circa 1895. I have purchased many items from these folks through the years for my personal enjoyment. I am not an expert in antiques. I do know what I like and this is a gorgeous wood very unusual to me, unlike the other pieces I have collected. I sell it now only due to a move. It is carved. Curvy, graceful, beautiful and graced my entry hall as the show piece that I think it is. I decorated it for every holiday and it is a delight for everyone. Approx. 64 inches high to top of mirror. 47 inches wide and 22" deep from back to drawer knobs. It has 6 lovely little drawers one drawer knob appears to have been repaired; 3 drawers on each side. Here we have an antique hand mirror! Hand carved with original glass. Wooden. Looks to have gotten quite a bit of use. As the finish on the handle is worn. Very smooth feel to the wood! Measures 12 1/4" long and 6" wide. Believe this to be from the late 1800's or early 1900's. Mirror glass does have a crack across it. This beautiful piece was brought back from Japan. Right before WW ll, from an American nanny that was working there. The piece had been in the family forever. I have no idea how old it is, only that it is very old. If I had to guess, I'd say late 1700's, early 1800's. There are a lot of chips of the"japanned" edges. Some of the pictures make the chips look lighter than it actually looks in person. I had an estimate of apx. $500 to repair the chips. Antique vanity/dressing table. Child's size? Measures approx. 5' tall(to the top of the mirror. 4'3" wide, 18" deep. In need of some love and a refinishing. The finish appears to have already been removed some years ago or it is just that worn. I don't know for sure though. Peeling and chipped veneer in many places. Is missing the little brackets that hold the mirror to the wood backing. Also missing a piece of glass for the top center(between the drawers) Both of those items are easily replaced. Someone wrote their name on the mirror, but it does seem to come off easily when scraped, so it is not etched in there. The mirror alone on this piece is worth $40.00. Hello and welcome to my auction. After my parents passed away I inherited the dressing table with tri-fold mirror pictured. Not real sure how old it is but I had the dressing table when I was a small chld. now a senior citizen) I do remember when I was a teenager my mother and aunt refinished it to this darker color. I was young and don't even know what kind of wood it is. It is a hard type wood and not pine. It has 2 drawers on each side and a little shelf in between. There are little rolling casters so it can be moved easily. The mirror is a tri fold mirror which looks like it has some haze to it. The mirrors could be replaced for not too much money. I considered taking this table apart and just using the sides with drawers as a night stand for a small bedroom. The piece had been in the family forever but they let her choose 1 piece to bring home.They called it a wedding chest and, since they had no girls to pass it down to, they let her have it. I have no idea how old it is, only that it is very, very old. If I had to guess, I'd say late 1700's, early 1800's. There are a lot of chips of the"japanned" edges. Some of the pictures make the chips look A LOT lighter than it actually looks in person. The flash must do that. I had an estimate of apx. $500 to repair the chips. The three pieces all match and were originally purchased together and monogrammed with the owner's initials which could either be CJC or CH. They are all hallmarked with Walker& Hall's maker's mark and assayed in Sheffield over 3 years. The mirror with a'w' 1914) The hairbrush with a'u' 1912) and the clothes brush with a'v' representing 1913. This isn't unusual when the same pattern was sold over a number of years. Because of the reflection. A large antique silver dressing table mirror with easel back. The silversmith was Henry Matthews and the design is romantic rural. The retaining strap for the easel is broken. The mirror has a bevel edge. The back and edges of the velvet are stained with silver polish. Along the way silver polish leaked onto the velvet. The velvet is discolored. There is a picture of the makers hallmarks on the mirror( the initials HM. The anchor, the lion, and the B for Birmingham) I would rate the condition a 7.5 because it has been polished with creme silver polish by the owner which damaged the velvet. There is a white layer on the old cloth. You can see white silver polish on the edge of the mirror under the metal. Please scroll down under this description for 34 additional views. 19th century antique dressing table mirror. 23" wide across the base, 22 1/2" tall, 8" deep base. The mirror which has a gently arched top is 13 3/4" wide and 17" high. The mirror frame is veneered with a slight convex surface. The mirror supports are solid wood with rope turnings over a stacked round base and are topped with turned finials. There are three simple feet under the bombe front base. The top surface and side are veneered- lovely figuring to the walnut veneer on the top surface. I am not sure if this is the original finish but I think it is- it shows some faint alligatoring and has wonderful rich color. There is an area of veneer loss on the far left end of the base and a little ding on the back of the base behind the mirror support. A ... morebit of wood is missing from one of the supports- it's on the back side and won't be noticed. The mirror has some tiny black spots on the surface- more prevalent and noticeable on the edges. The finish has some marks and scratches but I think perfectly acceptable for the age of the piece. Antique Solid Silver Mirror. Here we have a dressing table hand mirror in solid silver. It has a Birmingham hallmark dated 1924. Makers mark W.N ltd(William Neale& Son. There is a very attractive border detail around the back edge, it also has some very fancy Initials on the back. The mirror has a bit of silver missing in a few places near the inner edges but it could be replaced. There are a few tiny dimple marks and feint age related surface scratches on the silver. Fabulous large Antique Silver Table Mirror. 1898 by H.Matthews. The Mirror of large cartouche shape, the original bevelled mirror enclosed by scrolled frame pierced and embossed with rocaille foliage and surmounted by asymmetrical cartouche, light mauve velvet backing. Height: 14 ins. Condition: A few very small holes, the last photograph show the largest. The velvet back is original and as such shows some wear. There does not appear to be any silver sections missing…as so often with these mirrors. The mirror has a couple of pin point marks but otherwise is in very good shape and bevelled following the contours of the surround. These condition reports are mentioned for accuracy purposes only and the mirror should be considered as original and good.
