This is a child’s size antique commode or toilet chair. It measures 15” high. 17” wide, and 15” deep. A foot rest slides out with carpeting, and there is a carpeted top. There is a liftable lid and a porcelain pot with a decorative lid. There is a small crack in the lid. The other main flaw is wood chipped off an edge. I don’t know the precise age of this item. I restored this piece from top to bottom. This is some of the most beautiful burled walnut I have ever laid eyes upon.This is a world class antique and a gorgeous work of art. You will never tire of looking at this beautiful chest, it is so rich and beautiful. The highly burled walnut veneer over solid walnut drawer fronts is exquisite. The chest is solid walnut. Other than the drawer sides,drawer bottoms and drawer backs which are solid chestnut. The left side panel is the most gorgeous walnut side panel I have ever seen, no question about it. The burling looks like a storm cloud/ball of fire.The cabinet maker was not just a craftsman of the highest order, ... morehe was an artist as well. The side panels are 5/8 inch thick, cut as one plank of solid walnut.The top is solid walnut with a beautiful shaped edge. The drawer bottoms. Sides and backs are all made from solid chestnut(possibly oak)Old growth chestnut is highly sought after by wood lovers, it is virtually extinct, now being reclaimed at very high prices,these chestnut drawers that I hand rubbed a finish on, they are gorgeous. The chestnut drawers bottoms are chamfered by hand planing into the drawer sides. All of the drawers were restored, some drawer runners were replaced/restored. The lower drawers have some side to side movement when they slide due to age related shrinkage.Notice the tiny hand carved dovetail, a fine display of the highest level of craftsmanship. The finish is a light walnut which appears to be in pretty good condition with some areas of discoloration. The headboard is 7'4" h x 5'4" w. Foot board is 3'2 1/2" tall. Takes a full double mattress. There is a large carved cartouche at the top of the multi curved headboard with large applied panels with walnut burl veneer. Main part of the headboard has two recessed panels with assymetrical curved tops. Sides of the headboard are topped by large carved and turned finials. Footboard has same raised molding but has an elaborate carved element in the middle of the curved footboard. Side boards have raised molding and fit into foot and headboards with double hooks that ... morefit into notched holes. It’s a gorgeous cabinet. ... moreThe top has been all refinished to remove the nicks and dings. And the rest is all original, with only minor wear and rub marks, which is to be expected. Though the veneer is good overall, there is a slight warping of the secondary wood on the very top, underneath the veneer, and it doesn’t affect the finish. The cabinet itself is great, with hand-cut dovetails, the original back, and someone has put three brass rings hardware on the piece. The drawers offer plenty of storage. The overall size is 38.5 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 34 inches tall. It’s really tough to find a piece like this that dates back from the 1850s– 70s, in this kind of great condition.
