This a beautiful looking antique secretary desk with a mahogany wood/ finish. This desk shows very well and is in excellent condition. I would rate it a 9 out of 10. Desk has 4 draws in the lower bottom section, one of the four sticks a little when you go to open. I was told that a little polish/ wax should stop it from sticking, 3 shelves in the hutch area. Center writing area has 6-slots. 3 draws, 1 door compartment. And 2 small slide out hidden compartments. The satin finish show very well but I do not believe it is original. This wonderful Cut Signature measures approx. 3 1/2" by 1 1/8" and is mounted on a partial page from an autograph album The Signature appears to have been cut from a letter and although it is not dated. It came to us as one signature in a partial Autograph Album which included the 1860 John Breckenridge Signed Letter dated 1860 which we are also offering for sale this week on eBay as well as other dated autographs from the period 1857 to 1862. The Cut reads"Faithfully/ William H. Seward" William Henry Seward(May 16. 1801– October 10, 1872) was an American politician from the state of New York. He served as the 12th Governor of New York, United States Senator and the United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln ... moreand Andrew Johnson. A determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War, he was a dominant figure in the Republican Party in its formative years, and was widely regarded as the leading contender for the party's presidential nomination in 1860. On the night of Lincoln's assassination, he survived an attempt on his own life. NOVELTY WOOD WORKS MAHOGANY SLANT DROP FRONT MISSION WRITING DESK SECRETARY
From a New Hampshire estate and for your consideration is a Mission Style mahogany slant drop front writing desk produced by the Novelty Wood Works Co. 1897-1912) of Union City. PA. The desk is 30.25" wide and 32" tall and 15" deep. The height of the writing surface is 15. I estimate the age of this desk to be approximately 110 years. It is in good to very good condition with some light surface scratches and cup marks as pictured. More wear is shown(appropriately) inside on the work surface. There is evidence of use(and age) by the scuffing marks on the inside walls from opening and closing the desktop. This desk does not take up much space so would work great in smaller areas. 1896 RARE UTAH 1st SECRETARY of STATE MORMON LETTERHEAD Original JAMES T HAMMOND
Up for auction is a rare piece of Utah history. A blank sheet of letterhead from the office of James T. Hammond, Utahs first Secretary of State. The letterhead features two forms of the Great Seal of the State of Utah, one in blue at the upper left, and a large gold foil version in the center of the page. Light crease at top right corner, crease lengthwise down one side, but these are not heavy and largely correctible. Overall in very good condition. Utah only became a state in 1896, and Hammond served from the states admittance to the Union until 1905. He was responsible for the compiling of many of the laws already in force in Utah. Carved Knights Oak 1880 Secretary Desk. Secret Compartments. Richly hand carved about 1880 in the Renaissance manner this secretary desk from England has the original finish and hammered brass hardware. Lively carving depicts heads of knights in armor. A face and a griffin. The old finish is well preserved with warm patina and various shrinkage separations from age, see photos. Waxed and buffed. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The drop front rests on pull out supports, the lock works but doesn't latch. from RWay in Wisconsin. USA comes this gorgeous vintage china cabinet with stunning iron work in the doors above. The lower piece doubles as a secretary desk in the center and has two roomy drawers on either side, and four great large storage door cabinets below. One of the Claw Carved Feet is totally disconnected from the piece- it is reparable, we just haven't done it as of this date, as you can position it underneath the piece and it is very sturdy. It has original brass hardware. It has a big mechanical lid or writing surface in good condition. The interior of the desk is serpentine shaped with 3 drawers, a doored compartment, and six other compartments. The secretary drawers have serpentine fronts, are all dovetailed and in good shape. Hi. I am selling this really nice vintage desk. On the back there is the number 2449. Inside the top drawer is the metal label of Johnson-Handley Johnson Co. I have included a picture. The drawers are dove tailed and all of the drawers glide smoothly. This desk is very solid and very nice. But there are few small things I would like to point out. I have not polished or done anything to it since I received, including not dusting. There are some water rings on top, also a scrape on the top back left hand corner. On the first large drawer, down in the very right hand corner of it is a chip. Also on the left hand side there is a slight gap, probably just needs a tap but I don't do those things. Powell was first elected to the Illinois legislature in the 1930's and served as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1959 to 1963. He was elected to the statewide office of Illinois Secretary of State in 1964 and was re-elected in 1968. Although he never earned more than $30,000 a year, after his unexpected death in 1970, shoeboxes, briefcases, strongboxes with more than $800,000 in cash were found in his hotel residence in Springfield. This is an original 1924 check(see picture) Nicely signed by SECRETARY OF THE NAVY and CALIFORNIA CHIEF JUSTICE CURTIS WILBUR. Curtis Wilbur graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1884. Beginning in 1918, he served on the California Supreme Court and was California's 19th Chief Justice. Wilbur served as the Secretary of the Navy under President Calvin Coolidge from 1924 through 1929, and he is credited with enlarging and modernizing America's fleet and establishing the Naval Air Force. He later served on the U. S. Court of Appeals until 1945. Sadly, Curtis Wilbur died in 1954 at the age of 87. This check is clean and intact, exhibiting the usual bank marks and cancellations. The signature is clear and bold.
