It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. Then it goes down into a barley twist post base and a barley twist center cross brace. It is of European origin and dates from the 1880s. We had to make a repair on the bottom of the lid, but it is hardly noticeable. The desk is carved on the sides, base, and every direction you look. It comes with a hand cut dove tail drawer.

Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. Every surface shows hand planing marks on this classic and functional furniture. The beautifully figured one-board drop front rests on pull out supports. Lock and key work. Inside are tiny drawers with exquisite dovetail joints and compartments for papers- old India ink stains show this was a working desk. Brasses appear original on lower hand dovetailed drawers with chamfered bottoms. The bottom drawer has a warp, also there are numerous shrinkage separations from age, see photos. Antique Hepplewhite Federal style tambour desk. This piece is handcrafted primarily of solid dark mahogany. Adorned with linear and bell-flower inlays in contrasting woods. The top half of the desk has two tambour-covered sections containing three pigeon holes and a small drawer. There is also a locked center section. Sorry- no key! The lower part has a fold out. Hinged writing surface atop two full-sized drawers. Drawers are mahogany, with ash as the secondary wood. Dovetailed joints and wonderful nautical-themed brass pulls. The entire piece is supported by slender, tapered square legs. Piece most likely dates from the early 20th century. A beautiful addition to any collection! Overall. Very nice early secretary or Butler's Pantry measures approximately 81" H x 43" W x 21" D. Upper cabinet measures 38" W X 40" H x 10.5" D with 3 removable shelves. Bottom cabinet is 40" W x 18" H x 18.5" D with 1 shelf. Top drawer pulls out to reveal felt desk writing section. This section slides back to reveal hidden storage in the drawer. This piece has hand dovetailed drawers. The finish is the original which shows a nice patina. Shelves in the upper cabinet had original felt lining. The three adjustable shelves each measure 9” in depth and 41 ¼” in width. This is truly one of the most beautiful Victorian Secretaries of its kind that we have had the privilege to offer. In the desk section there are eight drawers that are banded with ribbon mahogany, eight letter compartments, a center storage door and four hidden compartments. The writing surface is a fine antiqued brown leather with a gold leaf border. Fluted corners, antiqued brass hardware and four carved bracket feet. Mahogany 1890's Secretary Desk& Bookcase. This classic mahogany secretary desk and bookcase is from the 1890's. Mahogany with matched flame grain panels and drawer fronts. The deep lustrous finish is excellent with a few shrinkage separations from age for antique character. The flip open writing surface rests on pull out supports. Large drawers have hand cut dovetails and chamfered bottoms on this hand made furniture from England. Both doors have individual panes of old wavy glass. Shelves adjust by sliding into grooves. From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The only problem that I see is the center decoration on top is loose. There are no other outstanding problems. This is local pick-up only or you may arrange for shipping. Welcome! I am proud to be offering for your consideration this antique mahogany secretary desk or Gov.Wintrop circa 1940s. This big old secretary was found in the basement of an old home here in NH. It does have a few tell tale features caused by the damp concrete that we want to declare. Even though they are no longer really an issue. The very bottom of the backboard has rippled plywood(see photo) when placed against the wall you will not see at all, and the very bottoms of the veneered sides were lifting and have been reglued. Because of this we are listing this secretary for about half its value. The secretary has original finish, original brass hardware. It has a really nice 8 1/2" tall turned finial on top of the traditional'broken arch' top. It has two fixed shelves in the bookcase top behind glass doors with original fret ... morework over the glass. It has a big mechanical lid or writing surface in good condition but for a tiny veneer chip(no cracks) The interior of the desk is serpentine shaped with 5 drawers, a doored compartment and two'secret' vertical drawers. The secretary drawers have serpentine fronts, are all dovetailed and in good shape. This piece has three Maddox labels, one brass and two paper. It is a two piece secretary for easy moving. A few nicks and wear marks add character to the wood, although there are not many and they are mostly concentrated around the base, which is normal for a piece of this age. Meanwhile, a series of brass swan neck pulls adorn the drawer fronts. The desk area itself is inlaid with a rich writing surface of fine, brown leather bordered by gold tooling. As far as we can tell, this leather appears in the condition as other vintage leather samples that we’ve come across, so it is most likely original. MAHOGANY BALL AND CLAW SECRETARY DESK / DRESSER - Manufacturer Unknown
I am not certain about the origins of this desk but it is beautiful. The only flaws are 1. The brass rail on the top is just sitting there and needs to be glued down. And 2. There are some minor scratches. See the pictures for details on both. I am not sure about the age, who made it or what wood it is made from, but it looks like mahogany.
