It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. This is a lovely antique hinged desk/writing table with a wooden box pencil holder which was purchased from an estate. The desk measurements are as follows: 15” deep 14-3/4” wide 4-3/16” high The wooden pencil box measures 10-1/4” long 3” wide 1-1/4” high As far as I can tell the box has its original finish and is in excellent vintage condition. There is a small area on one of the edges side where about ½” finish has been lightly scraped but I imagine a little Old English would touch this up. The main structure is satinwood which has a lovely blonde finish to the wood. Whilst into the structure of this has been embedded the amazingly intricate inlay work consisting of floral scrolls, leaves, urns, emblems and other heraldry. The amount of craftmanship that has gone into this is breathtaking if you imagine each piece of design has to be cut from the softer fruitwoods and then embedded into the main structure of the desk. You can only imagine how long this would take to achieve for a piece like this. The term'Carlton House' has become ... morea popular phrase to describe a writing table with a low superstructure that encloses the sides of the writing area as well as the back. The Prince of Wales. Later George IV, commissioned a table of this model in the 1790s for Carlton House. The desk has a leather topped writing area surrounded by small drawers. Cupboards and storage areas. There are also five larger drawers to the front of the desk so there is ample storage space on this piece. Each of the drawers also has more inlay work, as do the legs and the sides. Edwardian Mahogany Writing Table with Drop Leaves England. First half of the 20th Century, Brass Mounted with lifting Architect-style writing surface Item# 120012QIP07B This is a beautiful antique writing table. Probably crafted in England of the Edwardian influence, though later than the period. The solid boards of mahogany have brilliant grains, the mid-most center of the table lifting to create an angled writing surface. The interior has an interesting mechanism design, using a button on the back of the table to depress a little wooden catch, allowing the table top to lift and remain propped until the button is depressed again. At the back, a small compartment can be opened when the top is in lifted position, revealing several compartments and an old glass inkwell. On either side, the mahogany leaves lift on brass hinges, lifted on mahogany ... morewings that swing outward. The front of the table has a little hand dovetailed drawer with original round ring hardware. The table rests over tapered legs terminating in spade feet of the Hepplewhite influence. This is a precious little decorative piece, bringing great visual interest to any study or office setting, also being an excellent side table in a formal sitting area as it is quite unique and versatile. In overall outstanding condition with only the most minor of blemishes, sturdy and strong for regular functional use, this is a great find for any interior decorator or anyone looking to improve the variety of a room in their home. Measurements: 40 5/8" wide when opened. 26 1/2" wide when closed. 22 1/2" deep x 29" high Condition Report: Visually Outstanding Condition Minor scratches. |. |. Lovely Art Deco Birdseye Maple Small Desk Writing Table, A truly stunning birdseye maple writing table in the fabulous Art Deco style of the 1920s. The grain of the wood is truly fantastic. It has three drawers on each side with a useful slide above each bank of drawers. This versatile piece could also be used as a dressing table. Birdseye Maple occurs primarily in Sugar Maple and is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the Birdseyes. Matching chair available if required. Measurements: Height 78 cm x Width 180 cm x Depth 74 cm. Kneehole: Height 71 cm x Width 60 cm. In the days when all furniture was made essentially by hand. Birdseye Maple was used by only the most capable cabinetmakers. These artisans had developed the tools and skills to work and finish Birdseye Maple successfully. Antique furniture ... moremade out of Birdseye Maple is rare and beautiful. The divergent grain that makes Birdseye Maple beautiful also makes it difficult to work. Early woodworking machines ran at low rpms and had only 2 knives per cutterhead. This often produced Birdseye surfaces that were chipped and torn. It took many hours of hand planing and scraping to get these surfaces to a high sheen. This limited the use of Birdseye maple to projects whose value could justify the extra labour cost. The main structure is satinwood which has a lovely blonde finish to the wood. Whilst into the structure of this has been embedded the amazingly intricate inlay work consisting of floral scrolls, leaves, urns, emblems and other heraldry. The amount of craftmanship that has gone into this is breathtaking if you imagine each piece of design has to be cut from the softer fruitwoods and then embedded into the main structure of the desk. You can only imagine how long this would take to achieve for a piece like this. The term'Carlton House' has become ... morea popular phrase to describe a writing table with a low superstructure that encloses the sides of the writing area as well as the back. The Prince of Wales. Later George IV, commissioned a table of this model in the 1790s for Carlton House. The desk has a leather topped writing area surrounded by small drawers, cupboards and storage areas. There are also five larger drawers to the front of the desk so there is ample storage space on this piece. Each of the drawers also has more inlay work, as do the legs and the sides. This would make for a stylish piece for your home. Offered as it is in perfect condition. The piece also sits on brass castors so it is easy to move around. We are expecting a lot of interest in this piece which we were lucky enough to buy from a private house call in Regents Park London. New York City Circa 1920-40 Item# 130001OTY27 This is a French Louis XVI Style Antique Writing Table or Desk crafted in solid mahogany and mahogany veneers by Jacques Bodart. Inc. The desk retains the original photograph from when it was retailed by Jacques Bodart, Inc. during the first quarter of the 20th Century, noting this as#1681. It is a gorgeous piece, the original gilt highlighted tooled green leather preserved in remarkable condition, framed in well patinated molded mahogany over five drawers. The desk rests over four tapered and stop-fluted legs with square brass caps over each leg and terminating in plain brass capped feet. Jacques Bodart. This is a simply outstanding selection, only more so due to the fine patina and character developed throughout, perfect for home decorators and those passionate about original French designs. The desk stands on a blind plinth with rounded corners. Rising over which are two banks of four drawers, each having solid mahogany fronts with solid brass dropper handles of Rococo design with pierced oval back-plates, the drawers having mahogany linings and dovetail joints. To the kneehole is a single frieze drawer and over each bank there is a pull-out brushing slide. The desk is surmounted by a rounded corner moulded top with an ogee edge cross-banded in mahogany and inset with the antiqued red leather skivers with ... moregold tooling. To the reverse side of the desk there is a panelled back with a modesty panel to the centre. The desk is a free standing piece of furniture to enable it to stand in the centre of a room, and of good size. Date: The desk dates circa 1950- 1980.
