Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. I don't think we want to try to address this particular issue but please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

Antique Dated 1906. Hand Crafted& Signed On Pen Box, But Illegible, Large Estate Rosewood? Slant Desk/Letter Box/2 Inkwell 22x18x11" Wgt 23 lbs, Doors Are Warped But Desk Closes, Brass Bracket Ornaments Have Some Replacement Tacks, 1 Replaced Corner Bracket, Interior Is Complete, Key Is Replacement That Partially Opens Lock But Does Not Close Lock. This piece has a great patina and is in great condition for its age. It is antique and may not be perfect. I do not know the exact date it was made. It was made by the Pettibone Mfg. Co. in Cincinnati. OH. There is a brass tag on the center front of the desk part that says the company name and location. It says LIBRARY AND SOCIETY GOODS as well. The measurements are: Base: 29 ½ inches tall, 38 5/8 inches side to side and 30 ¼ inches front to back. It weighs 33 pounds. The desk was originally a slant front desk but someone somewhere along the line decided to modify it with ships so that the writing surface was flat. This is a very solid and heavy piece of furniture with the boards used to construct it being 3/4 of an inch thick of solid oak and the legs are up to an 1 1/2 thick of solid oak. The styling and heavy construction lead me to believe this is quite old. I would estimate 1880's. The paint is a newer modification though i am not sure when it was done. Judging from the age of the modification to make the desk flat I would estimate 1930's or 40's. The desk is in very good condition but it does have some wear and damage. ... moreThere are some chips in the paint along one edge where the modifications are and there is a chip in the right foot but it has long been painted over. Fine Antique 18th Century American Chippendale Mahogany Slant Front Desk c.1770
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

It features wonderful dense grain solid board mahogany lid, rabbeting on both sides to complete the horizontal frame, lifting smoothly over replaced brass hinges and falling on two sliding mahogany lopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby holes. The center drawer is a wonderful sunk 18-lobed ... moreshell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it in a form common in Massachusetts case pieces, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the parallel-grained pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards, behind which a pine bar perpendicular to the boards to support the top to the bottom, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. Each below larger proportionally to the one above, sliding in and out of the beaded frame. The white pine frame side rails are beaded on their top inner surfaces, dovetailed at the front and backs, the bottom boards running perpendicular to the case, chamfered along the edges and rabbeting into the frame. Wooden Slant Top Desk w/2 Inside Drawers
This antique wooden slant top desk opens up to reveal a storage area divided into compartments in the back. Two of which have drawers in them. The desk measures 33” wide. 23” deep and is 30 1/2” high in the front and 38 1/2” high in the back, including the back panel. It has a keyhole and some metal hardware inside but there is no key and the lid does not latch down. This desk most likely originated in the South. I do not know the age of the piece but would guess late 1800s? The inside compartments and drawers may have been added at a later date. It is not pine or oak but otherwise I am not sure what kind of wood it is made from. The outside has been stained at some point but the inside shows how light-colored the wood was originally. Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. A narrow secretary with small rectangular(ten) pigeon holes over a wide slanted top with butterfly hinges opening to a large interior within the lower portion of the desk. Ring baluster and block turned legs. Square head nails about 1 1/4 inches long. Brass locking mechanism for lid- no key. This desk was badly damaged during a move and lovingly peiced back together. One leg very badly damaged shows glued peices. see photo six) Many nails had to be replaced. The original nails that could be used were used and not replaced. Which makes me wonder if underneath the old, shabby-looking white paint, is the rest of the desk like this, or is it veneer or what is it? The drawers are painted on the outside, but inside are pine lined, which tells me that most likely the exterior is some sort of veneer. This piece came out of Denmark and dates from the 1840s to‘60s era. It’s a great period desk that someone decided to modernize in the shabby chic style many years ago with white paint and a gold border edge. The height to the writing lid, when opened, is 31 inches high, and gives you plenty of work space to write out checks for your antique purchases. The actual size of the desk, itself, is 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 43 inches high. It’s quite unusual, because it actually comes apart in two sections, as you can see in the side-view photos. It seems to have been some sort of old desk that opens up to store papers. A friend of ours suggested that it may have been a civil war era box used by an army commander to hold papers and then spread them out when it was time to use them, and put away for easy storage and transportation. We have not been able to verify this. The desk is in good shape overall. But does have some wear and tear to it. Some of the dovetail joints, all of which are hand cut, are coming loose, and one side is missing the trim at the bottom. The base measures 20 3/4" by 26 1/2" Measures 13 3/4" tall at highest point. American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. It is so well crafted and hidden that while after a close examination, the careful observer might suspect the presence of hidden drawers, actually being able to find these requires access to the backboards. Antique 1800's Walnut Store Countertop Slant Top Desk w\Inkwell Hole&Pen Tray
Antique 1800's counter top slant desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The slant front with aging has a couple of cracks from the wood drying over the many years.
