It has panel sides, rope twisted molding, detail cast brass hardware, escutcheons are intact. There are no keys or locks. The desk is 48 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 30 inches tall. The pull out writing surface measures 41 inches wide by 21 inches deep and height from the floor to the top of the writing surface measures 30 inches. The cylinder portion of this desk raises and lowers very smoothly and has a large brass lock mechanism on the bottom which is marked: Indianapolis Cab. Co Pat. Sunbleached on the front and sides, color well preserved in the back. Very minor dings and abrasions here and there throughout, including minor blemishes and stains to the leather top. No key. This authenticated antique desk and chair has hand carvings throughout the entire desk even including the back. There are 5 carved open compartments for organizing and a hidden drawer that opens the full length of the desk with 4 divided sections inside. The center disposal is the original period velvet sack with a hanging cord attached to a lovely ivory pearl stone set within a bronze circular ring with designs. A walnut wood weight is attached. Hand wood carvings include 2 beautiful ladies protruding from sides of desk and removable cupid on the top that is attached to the lid that covers the compartment where the clock sits. The clock has 3 different hand ... moredesigns and incased in bronze. The face is a natural cream ivory? porcelain with black Roman numerals. The face is aged with some hairlines but the numerals are bold without any color loss. The clock has 2 front legs and a weighted bronze pendulum that you can view from the photo. It does move side to side and I hear ticking but is in need of adjusting. The clock is original and fits perfect to view from a circular opening made for it within the desk. This all original desk is in very good condition without repairs. It is hard to believe there are only two tips missing from the delicate finials. Located on left side underneath the desk and on the right side bottom between the legs. You will need to really search in the pictures because they are very hard to find. It is very rare to find a set. How fortunate to have this elaborate matching chair with velvet padded seat in such wonderful condition. The carvings are amazing and please view the lion and the Fiorentino symbol on the back of the chair. In my 30 years of experience I have never seen a desk set like this. The piece has in total 12 drawers, better 4 sets of three drawers, 6 on the outside and 6 on the inside. Top is ebonized sitting over the top of 3 side by side drawers. Below is a quarter cylinder desk door, a"lid" or as referred to- a roll top. Rolling up the lid reveals matching classical interior, with columns as a frame for open middle, flanked by three fully functional drawers on each side, one over the other. The writting area in the middle slides out once the top is rolled up, as the ... moredesk has no knee hole. Antique Walnut Cylinder Desk Victorian Era c. Late 1800's Roll Top Barrel
Outstanding Victorian walnut cylinder desk. This intricately detailed piece has definite Eastlake influences including a decorative grid pattern that borders the panelled sides and back and elaborate scroll decoration below the writing surface. Cylinder top conceals pigeon holes and a pull-out writing surface covered in emerald green felt. Brass hinges. Diamond-shaped escutcheons and rosette-mounted bail handle drawer pulls. One long shallow top drawers as well as three half-size drawers and a generous cabinet space. Dowel construction throughout including the drawers, top and back. The locking mechanisms in the drawers have two patent dates- April, 1875 and August, 1882. No maker's marks. Over all this piece is in very good condition. Especially considering its age. One of the back feet looks like it has been repaired. See picture. There ... moreare also some cracks or seperations in the wood, probably caused by drying, most notably in the scroll on the right side and on the side just above it. Also pictured. There are a few small dings and dents and some light wear associated with age, but otherwise no significant damage. The desk stands 40" tall. This is a beautiful solid black walnut slant top writing desk. Circa 1810.The figured walnut top is very rich and beautiful with its grain patterns,rich walnut tones and beauty marks. I rescued this diamond in the rough. It had many many coats of white paint hiding this beautiful black walnut wood. I lovingly& meticulously hand restored this desk back to full glory. I restored the finish with many. Many coats of hand rubbed shellac, maintaining the antique warm glow, rubbed to a silky smooth yet allowing the beautiful grain textures to be felt.There was a trim around the back of the top which was missing, I custom made this new back rail trim using reclaimed 200 year old black walnut. The drawer pulls are from a 200 year old dresser and are solid walnut hand carved pulls. The harp shaped end is gorgeous as you can easily see with its ... morecone shaped finial on the end of the hand turned support which joins it to the drawer base.The slant top is fixed in position. There is no lid that lifts up, this was designed as a writing desk, dating back to the quill pen days. There is an age shrinkage split in the top which I chose not to restore. It gives great character to this lovely piece. The drawer locks are missing.I restored all the drawers, carefully taking them all apart and regluing them all and now they are rock solid and slide excellently. Full depth drawers with lots of storage.The desk is finished on all sides, allowing it to be placed anywhere in a room. The recessed flat panel sides are a great design. Adding to the beauty. I purposefully left some character marks remain in this desk such as tiny chip of wood,left top edge) pinholes etc, they give this desk awesome character, I was not trying to create a reproduction piece I try and respect the antique with all of its age, history and character. Antique 1800's Desk Walnut Slant Front Top Section Only or Countertop Original
Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The slant front with aging has ... morea couple of cracks from the wood drying over the many years. You can notice in photos#2,3,and#8 that the interior top looks lighter than the outside which is common with antiques where the outside is exposed to light, smoke, dust etc. thru the years darkening the color and I would say the exterior is close to a medium(Early American Minwax) color which is a desirable color for antiques.It's a fairly heavy piece about 26 lbs. and shipping will vary depending on where it's going just to let you know. This is a solid walnut carved art- nouveau/craftsman- styled desk which is finished on all four sides. I am estimating it was made between 1895-1915. When this style was gaining popularity. However, this kind of desk is extremely RARE. Especially since it is finished on all four sides. The very first photo has the front finished side with the five drawers/cabinets, and the other side has the identical carvings but with no drawers(last photo listed) There are also two different close-ups of either side of the most carved part, photos 2 and 7. The very first picture is a photo of the desk without the red felt covering, which was replaced recently after it was discovered through restoration work that the original top of the desk was red felt originally. This desk was bought at an auction of an old Pasadena home, where it"lived" for ... morea great number of years. There is slight peeling of the top walnut veneer but it can be easily repaired. It has been kept in excellent condition. There are 4 2 pigeon hol es and one large slot for magazines or othe r larger items. There is also a mail slot in the middle with a built in letter holder. The desk top is larger than your typical secretary desk. There is some cracking on the rim of the desk that would also be con sidered the inside of the top rim when the desk is closed. It does not go all the way through and can not be seen from the outside. The drawer pulls are original carved wood. The finish is original with a nice warm patina. You are looking at a beautiful antique English late 19th century travel secretary desk made by Bramah of London and retailed by Lloyd. Payne& Amiel of Manchester. The rectangular case having a hinged top and a drop-front with a leather inset writing surface, fitted interior and a secret compartment containing the original ink wells. Height 12 x width 16 3/4 x depth 10 1/4 inches. Made from burl walnut. One repair on the left side(see pictures) The secret compartment drawer is hard to pull out. American Federal Walnut Antique Slant-Front Desk, Mid-Atlantic States c. 1790
American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. It is so well crafted and hidden that while after a close examination, the careful observer might suspect the presence of hidden drawers, actually being able to find these requires access to the backboards. Antique Late 19th Century Walnut Secretary Desk Original Hardware England
This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. There are some slots for mail and smaller drawers as well that have the original brass knobs. The upper section is 34 12”w x 9 ¾”d. It comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport. Antique 1800's counter top slant desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The slant front with aging has a couple of cracks from the wood drying over the many years.
