House condition means that it came right out of a home. It came from a home on the south shore of Massachusetts. It shows minor wear marks here and there. It has a breadboard writing lid that opens to expose a multi-cubby hole interior with raised panel drawer fronts on the interior. It is missing one knob on the drawers on the interior. It has a center carved door and two cleverly hidden compartments behind the pillars. The supports pull out to support the lid when opened. The interior has a few wear marks, which is normal for this type of desk. It has the grill work on the top.

Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

I PURCHASED THIS DESK FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. IT HAS BEEN VERY WELL CARED FOR OVER THE YEARS BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT AGE. THE DESK IS VERY STURDY WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE AND NO SIGNS THAT ANY REPAIRS WERE DONE. THE DRAWERS MOVE EASILY AND STOP WHERE INTENDED. THE DRAWERS ARE ALL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITHOUT ANY BROKEN PIECES FROM OVERLOADING. THEY ARE ALSO FREE OF ANY STAINS. THE SURFACE HAS SOME SCRATCHES CONSISTANT WITH THE AGE OF THE ITEM. This is a Maddox Desk that I bought new in April 1978 from the Hitchcock Chair Company in Essex. CT. It has never been exposed to smoke, perfume, or scent of any sort. It has only been used to store my business cards and paperwork. It measures 39 inches high x 30-1/2 inches wide x 16 inches deep. I am moving and thought it would be better for someone to have this desk than for it to sit unused. I believe it is maple. Researching the company, they closed but have re-opened. I am not sure if Hitchcock made this desk, or if it was made for them by the Maddox company in Jamestown, NY. It looks just like one of their desks that I found photos of online. This Fine Desk was made by. Maddox Colonial Reproductions" of Jamestown, NY, from Mahogany Wood. It measures at 33.5" W x 16.5" D x 41.5" H and is in good condition. The drop down desk surface has sliding desk supports, and it has well outfitted interior compartments. One of my favorite elements of this piece are the hidden compartments, common to these desks. A little history. Maddox began the Maddox table company in 1898. In the early years, Maddox made a variety of tables. Eventually, Maddox became known for the colonial reproductions that were featured in their line as they expanded from tables to include other furniture. This desk is part of its colonial reproduction line. It has the original metal stamped crest on the rear of the desk. Happy bidding!

Welcome! I am proud to be offering for your consideration this antique mahogany secretary desk or Gov.Wintrop circa 1940s. This big old secretary was found in the basement of an old home here in NH. It does have a few tell tale features caused by the damp concrete that we want to declare. Even though they are no longer really an issue. The very bottom of the backboard has rippled plywood(see photo) when placed against the wall you will not see at all, and the very bottoms of the veneered sides were lifting and have been reglued. Because of this we are listing this secretary for about half its value. The secretary has original finish, original brass hardware. It has a really nice 8 1/2" tall turned finial on top of the traditional'broken arch' top. It has two fixed shelves in the bookcase top behind glass doors with original fret ... morework over the glass. It has a big mechanical lid or writing surface in good condition but for a tiny veneer chip(no cracks) The interior of the desk is serpentine shaped with 5 drawers, a doored compartment and two'secret' vertical drawers. Antique Leather Inlay Desk-Maddox Original (Refurbished)
This is a Maddox Manufacturing Leather In-lay Desk that was in distressed condition when I bought it. I have spent many hours trying to recondition the wood and bring back the piece to an elegant and more modern look. I replaced the damaged leather top and replaced with a black leather and paired it with a cherry stain that gave it back its period elegance with todays colors. I did recondition the hardware and it turned out very nice. It is a brass plated metal that it in good condition. Considering what they looked like when I got the desk. I did the best I could but it isn't perfect, slight imperfections on the leather desk top cut(pictured) but overall has tremendous character. This Maddox Secretary Desk is from the 1940's. It has been in my family since I was born. It is approximately 84 inches tall. 36 inches wide and 21 inches deep when closed. When opened the table top/desk measures 35 in. x 15 in. There is one flaw on the top left of the bottom drawer and can be seen in the fourth picture. This is a very nice Chippendale style mahogany secretary desk. The desk is complete and is in good condition with several cosmetic flaws but great structural integrity. This desk is complete with original"Genuine Mahogany" tag(photo#3) 2 paper Maddox tags and a metal Maddox shield(photo#9) The shield reads"Maddox Colonial Reproductions Jamestown, NY. The desk is complete with claw feet(photo#5) and beautiful top decoration(photo#4) There are four large drawers in the bottom part of the desk that work perfectly. The desk is quite beautiful when you put the slant top down into writing position. The writing surface is in nice condition but does have several scratches on it. There are five small drawers across the inside of the desk that are topped by 8 letter slots(4 on each side) an open center space with a door, and two hidden ... morevertical pillar drawers(photo#6) There is some damage around the knobs of the drawers and door, particular the center drawer and door, and something stuck inside one of the letter slots(see photo#7) The glass doors on the top of the desk are in very nice condition with the only visible flaw being some imperfection(retouching? in the finish at the center of the doors(photo#8) There are three shelves behind the glass doors. The top shelf has some paper stuck on three side of the back left corner(I do not know if it can be removed or what the finish looks like underneath it) and a circular scuff mark on the back in the center(photo#10) On the lower portion of both the right and left side there is some kind of residue or damage(photo#11) I do not know exactly what it is or if it can be repaired. Finally, the curved parts that stick out above the first large drawer have some damage from moving(photo#12) This desk was in the living room of my grandparent's house from the 1950's or 1960's until we recently sold the house and moved it up to New Jersey. There are a few scratches, the worst being on the top of desk where the bookshelf sits, see last pic. It is missing the finial on the top center. There are 7 original handle pulls, the bottom 2 are missing the bale. There is one that doesn't match. There is also a strip of wood that was broken where the lock goes on the top of the desk, you can only see it if the desk is open. See pic#5 Other than the mentioned issues. Gorgeous Antique Maddox Governor Winthrop Drop Front Desk
This beautiful antique desk is is great condition. It was made by the Maddox company(see the picture with the company stamp in the drawer) The drawers all slide nicely and the detailing on the inside is perfect. The drop down lid opens to reveal a beautiful multi-drawer cubbyhole interior with a carved door and two cleverly disguised hidden compartments behind the multi-turned spindles. There is also a horizontal space beneath the cubbies perfect for sliding paper or books out of the way. There are four serpentine dovetail drawers and the base has multi-ply molding and four ball and claw feet(which I believe are in the Chippendale style) Original hardware. I try to include as many pictures as possible to give a good idea of the condition. I think it's beautiful as is but if the few small imperfections bother you the quality of this piece ... moremakes it a good contender for refinishing. Approx. 35" wide 20" deep and 40" tall. Here is a beautiful vintage 8-Drawer Wood Desk. Circa 1940's. I couldn't find a maker's mark- although I didn't look underneath- but it looks a lot like Desks made by Maddox of New York. This Desk is well-built and solid- each Drawer features Dovetail construction. This Desk has an imbedded red Leather Top. With gold detailing, Brass Drawer/Side Handles and a 3/8" thick piece of Glass on top. There are three Drawers on the top- a smaller Drawer on each side and a large Drawer in the middle. Below these top Drawers there are three Drawers on the left side and two Drawers on the right side; the bottom right Drawer is a two-Handled File Drawer. This Desk is in good condition for it's age. But does have various blemishes here and there, including some nicks, scratches, scuffs, dings, stains, etc. Some of the Drawers are ... morea little tight when pulled/pushed in and out and could use some lubrication/wax. Our beautiful neighbors left this for us after they had a major life change. After hours of researching what the famous Maddox Colonial Drop Down Secretary Desks are all about. What is certain is that most of the confusion lies in that these OLD VINTAGE/ANTIQUE pieces were a result of a series of OLD Colonial Revival-style reproductions, created under the trade name"Maddox Colonial Reproductions" However, these"reproductions" were created between about 1918 and the 1950's! So while they are"reproductions" of much older colonial-age furniture pieces. The"reproductions" are now themselves vintage& antique. Make sense? I've seen a few exactly like the one I'm listing here in worse condition. Asking hundreds of dollars, and 90% of the listings know very little about them if anything. Further research on my part. I learned how splitting the hairs on this"vintage/antique of an antique reproduction" isn't so easy to pin down when it comes to the actual age of each piece of wood

Solid Wood Construction with well preserved Leather and Gilt Design Top. Completely finished including the backside for placement anywhere. The drawers slide as new. Very minor wear. The wood has no chips, cracks or bottom scuffing. Just a great piece which belonged to my aunt since new. There are two labels shown in the photos. It was an inheritance piece. Fully marked with company logo as shown. Maddox was maker of higher medium quality Colonial Revival reproductions. Their designs were often quite faithful to the original. This American Mahogany Secretary Desk is a splendid example of one of the Colonial Revival secretary desks that was produced by Maddox Table Company. While many companies manufactured this secretary desk. This Maddox version was considered top of the line. Starting from top to bottom, with its arched broken pediment, ... moreurn and flame finial, the nooks and crannies in between, and all the way down to its elegant claw and ball feet, this secretary desk is an inspiring piece of America's past. The glass doors open to reveal three shelves, including the base shelf, that provides ample room for showcasing books, photos, or favorite objects of art. Its slant front desk drops down to reveal a fitted interior with cubby holes and drawer. Most of these bookcase secretary units were made between the 1920s and the 1950s. This particular Secretary has been used by one family only, lately as a computer desk, hence the wire hole in the exterior. Piece has been refinished but retains original glass and hardware.
