Over 75 linear feet of 10' tall Gothic cabinetry from one of the most prominent NYC pharmacies. These units are approximately 3' wide by 10' and 16" deep. The upper bookcase sits on the lower unit comprising of two drawers over one cabinet door. Hand crafted custom cabinetry from the early 1900s. These are from one of the most prominent 19th century pharmacies in New York City who's proprietor is known as"the father of modern pharmacy" and founded the Pharmacy Board of New York. Double ogee cornice with rising fanned mahogany crest in the manner of Giles Grendy. The interior beautifully worked and fitted with secret compartments flanking the central door. These have ... moregiltwood capitals of scrolled laurels on reeded corinthium columns and pull forward to reveal secret oak lined compartments. The central door with original. Finely detailed, brass hinges and original lock. All original brass handles and finely boarded oak linings to the drawers with the drawer fronts, again of a lovely colour, of well figured mahogany. Here for auction we have a rare Victorian walnut bureau bookcase of narrow proportions in the Queen Anne manner dating to the second half of the 19th century. This stunning example in keeping with traditional design has an arched cornice over a single mirrored door enclosing adjustable shelves along with drawers and pigeon holes as well as an oak sliding candle tray. The bureau base has a fall down front enclosing further drawers supported by pull out lopers with a bank of graduating drawers being raised on bracket feet. It is beautiful with a slanted desk that pulls down and opens to a beautiful play for stationary. Etc. On top is a glass paneled curio cabinet/ bookcase. It has dove tail joints on the drawers. As I believe they had a brand called Library Bureau. Its hardware& moldings look similar to some of the Globe styles. In any case. It's a nice bookcase in good shape, with very clean lines, nice golden-oak color and appears to be constructed of mainly quarter-sawn oak with little if any veneer on the main exposed parts(excepting the back of course, and possibly the bottoms inside which look like a clear maple) The finish appears intact, with its age-related character. We've given this a cleaning, you may want to go further with perhaps some steel wool, decades of office-life generally leave these old barristers with their typical use-related'Character' ... moreplease see the photos) which to my eye is all part of the antique. We used this piece for holding antiquarian natural history books and art-books. For which it works excellently. But old Barrister Bookcases are great for displaying many sorts of things, keeping them dust-free& safe. It's about 9 1/4" deep and about 44" tall overall. The top& bottom shelves are both 22 3/8" wide. The yop is 8 1/4" deep with a 2 1/2" backplash around it. The bottom shelf is 6 1/4" deep. The drop front writing area is 22 1/4" X 21 1/2" The leather pad is 19 1/4" X 11 7/8" The writing area is about 27 1/2" off the floor. A WORD ABOUT THE CONDITION. The overall condition of this drop front desk is good. All of our items have all been around for quite a while. We do not sell reproductions. This desk is Not Perfect, but is structurely sound and is a wonderful desk with super character, great eye appeal and will last another lifetime or two with normal use and care. It has been made from the finest mahogany with fabulous floral marquetry decoration of various exotic veneers. And elegant ormolu handles and mounts. The top has two glazed doors which open to reveal two adjustable shelves and t he base has three oak lined deep drawers. Very useful for storage. The cylinder fall is raised as the writing surface is pulled out. For use as a desk, and the interior has small drawers, a small cupboard and secret compartments for storing pens, papers, etc. It has an inset green leather writing surface with blind tooling. This bureau bookcase was made around the year 1910. The wood used in its creation is mahogany. It features two adjustable bookshelves, a fall down desk section, and drawers for storage. True to the time period. This antique borrows Queen Anne style legs and puts them together with gorgeous Gothic arches on the doors. Inside the glass doors are ... moretwo adjustable wooden shelves that adjust via an alligator bracket system. The glass doors lock with an included key. A dentil moulded cornice finishes the top bookcase section off nicely. The bureau section(also known as a butlers desk) opens up to reveal a felt covered writing area. A small locking door with key, two small drawers, and numerous storage spaces. The felt has a tear in it and is stained in places. The desk section measures 34″ wide x 19.5″ deep x 30″ tall when open. A lock for the desk is present but no key remains. Below the desk is a bank of drawers that work great on their wooden runners. These drawers are made with dovetailed joints and feature brass handles. All four drawers have locks but there is no key for them. The condition of this antique bureau bookcase is fair. Structurally it is a sound piece that will function for many years in a living room or bedroom. It has quite a few cosmetic issues which for many people add to the authenticity and character of an antique. We have tried to capture as many of these cosmetic issues as possible in the pictures.
