Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. Vintage Governor Winthrop mahogany desk Reproduction made by Maddox Table Co. Classic features. Serpentine front Original hardware and locks. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

Antique Oak Tole Painted Shabby Chic Slant Front Desk w/ Gallery Shelf This is a very solidly build heavy oak slant front desk that has been painted in the tole fashion. The desk was originally a slant front desk but someone somewhere along the line decided to modify it with ships so that the writing surface was flat. This is a very solid and heavy piece of furniture with the boards used to construct it being 3/4 of an inch thick of solid oak and the legs are up to an 1 1/2 thick of solid oak. The styling and heavy construction lead me to believe this is quite old. I would estimate 1880's. The paint is a newer modification though i am not sure when it was done. Judging from the age of the modification to make the desk flat I would estimate 1930's or 40's. The desk is in very good condition but it does have some wear and damage. ... moreThere are some chips in the paint along one edge where the modifications are and there is a chip in the right foot but it has long been painted over. Fine Antique 18th Century American Chippendale Mahogany Slant Front Desk c.1770
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. American c.1810. Desk has exposed dovetail joints on top, a slant lid with inlaid corners and a center diamond, opening to a fitted interior of small drawers over a case having pull out lid supports flanked by a single drawer over 3 graduated drawers, all with inlaid designs on corners and standing on splayed bracket feet. Desk is in original as found condition with scratches, gaps and dings, slight finish loss and wear and having older repairs and a recently rebuilt leg support. Seems to be period hardware. This is a great antique 19th century French slant front desk with excellent craftsmanship shown in the carving work and the lid where you can see the hand planing that was done to the piece. The hardware is all original on this piece but the leather has been replaced. There are a couple imperfections that are shown in the final two pictures there is a nearly identical one as seen in picture 11 over the other pull out to lay the slant down on that couldn't be pictures. Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. You can notice in photos#2,3,and#8 that the interior top looks lighter than the outside which is common with antiques where the outside is exposed to light, smoke, dust etc. thru the years darkening the color and I would say the exterior is close to a medium(Early American Minwax) color which is a desirable color for antiques.It's a fairly heavy piece about 26 lbs. and shipping will vary depending on where it's going just to let you know. The desk features a gorgeous original finish and period hardware. There are four graduated drawers over flared french feet and shaped skirt. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. It is so well crafted and hidden that while after a close examination, the careful observer might suspect the presence of hidden drawers, actually being able to find these requires access to the backboards. This Fine Desk was made by. Maddox Colonial Reproductions" of Jamestown, NY, from Mahogany Wood. It measures at 33.5" W x 16.5" D x 41.5" H and is in good condition. The drop down desk surface has sliding desk supports, and it has well outfitted interior compartments. One of my favorite elements of this piece are the hidden compartments, common to these desks. A little history. Maddox began the Maddox table company in 1898. In the early years, Maddox made a variety of tables. Eventually, Maddox became known for the colonial reproductions that were featured in their line as they expanded from tables to include other furniture. This desk is part of its colonial reproduction line. It has the original metal stamped crest on the rear of the desk. Happy bidding!

American Chippendale Slant Front Desk over Scroll Cut Bracket Feet Salem or Boston. Massachusetts c. 1770-90 Item# 120201PUP05 Presenting some of the best of the American Chippendale Period. This fine slant front desk is crafted of solid Cuban Mahogany, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flanking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers. The centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon ... moreholes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers, each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards. Though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1940 and American made. This is a Governor Winthrop style slant front desk with drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches, front to back and within the desk itself there are 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown in my photographs. Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. This desk has everything you would want: beautiful finish work, large storage drawers, and internal cubis and drawers.The desk is 42 7/8 inches high, 21 inches deep, and 39 3/4 inches wide. It has all original hardware, ball and claw feet, a secret compartment, and a key to lock the top portion of desk. It was commissioned by NL Gardner in 1905, and has been in the family since. SOLID WALNUT AMERICAN ANTIQUE C 1800S SLANT DROP FRONT DESK BUREAU HIDDEN DRAWER
Here is a fantastic find.an antique SOLID walnut slant front desk probably from the Pennsylvania area circa 1830 to possibly 1850. The walnut has a deep and beautiful grain and patina. All of the drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing, each drawer is hand dovetailed, the brass hardware pulls and escutcheons are original, the hidden drawer is shaped and in the interior section behind small door, bracket feet are original, secondary wood is pine and the back boards of pine are hand planed. Overall, this desk is a beauty. Height to the top = 43" Height to top of work space = 32" Width = 39 1/2" Depth = 22" Condition.there is an old repair on the drop front and one of the small metal knobs on the inside has been replaced with a similar knob. Treasure House. Slant front desk by Colonial Mfg. Company. This is a museum reproduction authorized by the Edison Institute. This desk is mahogany with beautiful inlay detail inside and out. There are scratches on the top of the desk and on the flip top lid. On the right hand side.see pictures. Center portion of desk pull out to reveal a hidden compartments. Small abrasions on front of drawers from wear. Gauge on front of desk on left hand side bottom trim piece(see pics) wear on edges of entire piece. From a New Hampshire estate and for your consideration is a Mission Style mahogany slant drop front writing desk produced by the Novelty Wood Works Co. 1897-1912) of Union City. PA. The desk is 30.25" wide and 32" tall and 15" deep. The height of the writing surface is 15. I estimate the age of this desk to be approximately 110 years. It is in good to very good condition with some light surface scratches and cup marks as pictured. More wear is shown(appropriately) inside on the work surface. There is evidence of use(and age) by the scuffing marks on the inside walls from opening and closing the desktop. This desk does not take up much space so would work great in smaller areas. Fine Antique Lancaster County. PA Federal Sheraton Cherry Slant Front Desk 1820 100% Untouched Original Condition! This desk is straight out of the house. In excellent fine condition. 4 graduated drawers flanked by turned columns. Resting on turned feet. Great Size! 38" wide. Again which is not normal. most desks are 41" to 43" wide, this one is quite narrow. Dovetailed case. TOP, AND BOTTOM! it is rare to find these chests/desks dovetailed, let alone the base and top dovetailed. Solid Cherry Case. Again, its a very early sheraton piece, most sheraton desks have paneled sides, this is solid sides indicating it was made slightly after 1800 to about 1810 to 1815. Dovetailed drawer construction. Cherry slant lid. With Flame Burl Mahogany veneer front. Pine Drawer Fronts. With Mahogany Cockbeading, and Mahogany Flame Burl Veneers ... moreand Poplar sides, and bottoms. Cherry. Mahogany veneers, Pine drawer fronts with mahogany veneers, and Poplar Secondary woods. The interior has a prospect door that opens to reveal 4 drawers. Tiger maple turned column drawers next to the prospect door. drawers slide great on the ORIGINAL drawer slides. Which is one of the first items to wear out on the early desks, usually resulting in replacements. Unusually tall writing surface. Which would indicate the desk was originally owned by a shop keeper or a businessman of sorts. you will need a tall stool to set at the desk. a nice early windsor type stool would look nice with the desk! Original Finish. Brass drawer pulls, and all of the interior knobs, and lid support knobs. Condition: aside from being the cleanest desk we have ever owned. The overall physical condition is NEAR MINT 98% PRESERVED CONDITION! the only flaws are minor veneer chips on the base from a stool/chair, and 2 spots of veneer loss on the lid, and veneer split due to wood shrinkage on the lid.
