But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. I went to a ... moregood auction in upstate New York the other day and tried to pick up smaller furniture that fits within Greyhound Express size limits. Anyway this is a score and I'm proud to offer this for your consideration. I believe this is a No 17 model desk and it is truly in very nice condition with no signs of repairs or break except the bottom drawer has a minor glue in corner. The finish is very good as the pictures should show off and the original key works fine and all hardware is original and working perfectly. It is nice and sturdy a sets flush with no wobbles. It measures 47" tall x 30" wide x 17" deep. The back is not beautiful with the white wash but the original Larkin labels are present and in good shape. Once again Greyhound Express is great and should ship this for about 90 west coast and 70 east. As long as you can pick it up. Local pick up is always option too and I now have a utility trailer and can deliver within reason. I tried to picture it well to both show it off and answer questions and price it nice so shipping is easier on wallet. I saw the same desk in online shop for 650 plus shipping. This is a really well built secretary desk/bookcase. Nice heavy oak. Sawtooth shelf brackets. Knapp dovetailing in the drawers dates the piece between 1870 and 1900. The smaller mirror is bevelled. The pulls are all a nice heavy brass. The condition is excellent. The cabinet is 81 inches tall. 55 inches wide and 17 inches deep. There are six skeleton locks. But no key. The cabinet on the upper left has a mirror on the back wall. There are two oak shelves that can be adjusted with the sawtooth oak bracket(see photo) It is 27 inches wide 45 inches tall and 9.5 inches deep. The two drawers on the lower left are 8 inches tall. 27 inches wide and 9 inches deep. The drop front desk lid is 18 inches tall and 23 inches wide. Inside the desk ar cubby hole and a small drawer. Below the desk part is a drawer that is 4 1/2 inches tall. 23 inches tall ... moreand 9 inches deep. Below that drawer is a cabinet that is 16 1/2 inches tall. 23 1/2 inches wide and 14 inches deep. Cherry Drop Front Desk/Secretary, Carved Heads, Carved Front , Spindles, Panels
This is one of the prettiest antique pieces I have seen for a while. Structurally. It is in very good condition. The joints are all tight, the dovetails are excellent and there is little if any damage to the intricate carving. It is constructed of solid cherry with oak drawer sides. The drawer sides show very little wear and all of the bottoms are original to the piece. Unfortunately, the drawer pulls are probably replacements and the piece came to me with a flat mirror. The top panel on the right side has a slight split caused by normal shrinkage. for sale probably the nicest period walnut secretary piece to be had. it was advertised as belter some 20-25 years ago at an estate auction in miss. i expect it is mitchell and rammelsburg but it does not matter. it is civil war era probably made circa 1860-1870. the drawer are hand dove tailed for joints and the bottoms are hand chamfered. it is in perfect condition. the drawers are all solid and do not wiggle or wobble. all the drawers and doors fit perfectly. all drawers and doors have functional locks that work perfectly with the original key. there are no seams in the construction. the sides of the lower drawer portion is one board like 18+ inches wide as well as the sides of the bookcase portion. the walnut used in the construction is of the finest quality with wonderful and perfect grain. it as you see has a pierced carved crest or ... morecrown board that is superbly done and matches the carving on the top of the arched doors of the bookcase. inside the cubbies are perfect along with the drawer. it is a 2 piece affair. The bookcase and cubbies section lifts off the base. it sits on the base and is secured with pegs on either side. i expect the leather on the drop front has been replaced. it is in great condition. the whole piece is just about as good as it can get, not damages or blemishes anywhere that are noteworthy. of course all the large key covers are carved as well as the drawer pulls. it is just a very very nice item. i think it cost about 4500 20 some years ago. i have still have several secretaries and have owned many many of them. i have never owned a nicer one. it is probably the tallest one i have ever owned. it is 98.5 inches to the top of the crest with its original porcelain casters. the cabinet portion is 33 inches tall and 44 inches wide, and 19.5 inches deep. it is 65.6 inches from the top of the cabinet to the top of the crest. the outside of the bookcase is 42 inches wide and 122 inches deep. the inside of the bookcase is 35 inches tall, 10 inches deep, and 40.5 inches wide. the secretary

This Winthrop slant top ball and claw secretary desk dates from the 1940s. It has all the original brass Chippendale hardware on the front. As you open up the breadboard writing surface. Automatic extensions come out to support the writing lid and it also exposes a wonderful multi-cubby hole section with 3 deep drawers. This interior has a carved door storage area and two cleverly designed units behind multi turn spindle posts. When I was little my parents always used to hide things in those drawers and it took us years to figure out where they were. This desk was made by Maddox out of Buffalo. NY they were well known for their high quality and stylish furniture. It is simply stunning in its Ebony/black finish. It is large, yet perfect as a multi tasking piece of furniture for smaller homes or apartments. We are selling a lovely antique secretary drop front desk with an inlaid design on the front. As you can see the inlay pattern is quite nice and incorporates mother of pearl. The desk stands approximately 40" high by 28" wide by 15.5" deep. While the desk is a little rough around the edges- it could use a thorough cleaning and does have a number of scuffs and dings. As well as some loss to the back panel and the lower right edge of the front- it has a nice shape and patina with a little TLC will have a lot of use left to offer. Antique 1900-1950 Slant Drop Front Oak Secretary Desk - Lionhead
I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite like it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor.
