With a coloured lacquered wood floral design to the top and finished ... morewith a tassel. The top has the most lovely design of flowers and outlining in coloured and textured pyrography- where the wood was decorated with hot tools to produce a raised and textured effect. This box has a rather Art Nouveau look to it. The box has a little drilled hole in the side of the base. Through which fine string or ribbon can be threaded and then pulled out beneath the top, but it can also be used as a standard box for holding paperclips or small items on a desk or dressing table. The item is nicely made and has an old paper label underneath which reads"Au Printemps" So I think this was orignally sold in France. Condition is overall very good. Ut there is some wear to the green varnished areas in the top design- but this is still a lovely and rare piece. If used as a string box. I feel this would be best suited to thin string, thread or twine, as shown in the picture- and will be included with the box- rather than thick string. The desk comes with four raised panel dove tail drawers that retain all the original hardware. The center where the legs go have a reverse cove carving, which I have never seen in oak. It has a scallop bottom trim base, raised panels all the way around and a wide bevel edge on the solid tiger sawn oak top. The only negatives I see on the desk is that there is a little wear on the edge of the top from rubbing against something and there is a split going down the center of the top. We most likely could pull the top off and repair the top, which wouldn’t make a huge difference, but it is an expensive repair. The desk itself is high end quality.

Antique 19th Century Sea Captains Lap Desk - Writing Desk - Inlay - Escucheons
Here for bid is a 19th century folding lap travel desk. I was told that this size of box was often used by sea captains saving room in there tight state rooms. Maybe just a theory not sure. I would consider this box desk in pretty good condition for its age and compared to others I have seen. However as you can see in the provided photos it is not perfect and has wear. Nicks, cracks and chips that one would expect to see in this old of a piece. It needs inkwell replacement so forth and so on. I have no key for this desk but they are easily found. Some of the brass or copper inlay has been tacked a few small pieces missing. This type of scowling inlay is very hard to find for they took a lot of skill and work to make I am sure. Overall this desk has a lot character and charm. The hinge is tight and closes correctly. There are several escutcheons ... morethat were with this desk which also leads to maritime. One of a kind. Very good condition woman's writing desk from Mexico, circa 1900. This one of a kind piece has no screws or glue, and fits like a puzzle! This desk was brought to the United States circa 1970 from Durango, Mexico by my Grandmother. She in turn received it from her piano teacher years before! The front inlaid cartouche and escutcheon are both made from Mother of Pearl or Nacre shell. Once opened. The top fitted section reveals a pen tray a lidded compartment for additional pens, and other necessities, two small sloped compartments for pen nibs and clips and two(later) brass topped glass inkwells. One cabinet is missing the lock and the lock on the other cabinet may or may not work. Keys come with the desk but I didn't want to force the lock. Below the writing slope is another compartmentalized hand dovetailed boxwood drawers to store additional sewing materials. The lid features the original working lock and key. Beneath the sewing table drawer there is a pull out sewing box drawer constructed with boxwood and is in original condition. The front and the back of the box are also inlaid with floral satinwood. The table stands on solid turned walnut supports terminating in splayed legs with the original mug castors. A turned stretcher connects bots sets of legs for extra stability. Here is an antique writing desk with the flip up top. The desk pulls out when the top is open. This can be seen in image 5. It is in overall good shape with great patina. The desk can be used as is. Restored or as a garden table. This would also make a great computer desk. The photos show some of the areas that have scratches, scuffs or cracks. Images 5-7 show the measurements. Image 3 shows some damage to the top when the desk is closed. Image 4 shows that the leg has a piece missing. This is available for local pick-up only. For sale here is one of the more unique pieces from our furniture collection. A small antique drop leaf writing desk, made from solid mahogany, and in an elegant Arts& Crafts or Mission style. It features a single drawer, a small shelf/brace beneath, and cubby areas inside. We've never seen another like it. Especially made from solid mahogany throughout(even the drawer interior and back) and from the Mission/Craftsman style and era. It appears to be handmade, possibly by an individual craftsman, and bears no manufacturers marks. It's dimensions are 41"T x 30"W x 16"D. With the dropped leaf itself measuring 26W" x 13D" As far as condition goes. It is very solid and sturdy, and still has its original finish and hardware.
