It has claw front feet and is in very good condition, however, it does have ... moresome light surface scratches and general wear that are typical of a piece that probably dates to the early 19th century, although I cannot be completly sure of its age. It has lovely carved accents and trim. The key is intact with it and the little side supports come out automatically when the front writing desk surface is lowered. Someone has unfortunately drilled a hole in the back that is about 2" in diameter. The desk has 4 drawers with all of the original knobs intact. It stands 41" tall at the trim at the back, 40" tall at the top, is 41" wide at the feet, 37" wide at the top, and is a total of 22" deep at the bottom, and 19" deep at the top.

Wonderful vintage piece in very good condition made by The Maddox Co in Jamestown. N.Y. It is 78" high 34"wide, and 17" deep. The original key opens the desk, 4 large drawers, and the china cabinet. contents not included) The feet are the ball and claw and the slanted desk has a small cabinet, hidden pockets, and 4 small drawers. The bookcase has a serpentine crest, the doors with arched wavy glass panels. The interior has three adjustable yellow maple selves and maple back boards. Just below the bookcase are two drawers. The secretary case at top has a drop forward writing surface. Below are three long drawers with carved nuts and leaves grips. The drawer interiors are maple. This item is in the Eastlake style which is most easily identified by the round dovetails utilized on the drawers. Featuring the original finish, this piece had burl walnut posts on top of the exceedingly high bookcase and burl walnut panels in the base. The base has a large circular dovetail drawer and two burl walnut faced cabinet doors and an applied molded baseboard that supports the attractive cylinder desk and spindle gallery topped double door bookcase. Open the burl walnut panel cylinder to expose a burl walnut double drawer cubbyhole gallery. There is an old-time ink stain in the back. Which adds charm and character. The writing surface pulls out, ... moreand we have re-felted it in period looking green as the original was far too worn to be functional. On top of the cylinder roll, you'll see the two original wavy bubble glass doors that hold four adjustable shelves, and offers tons of storage. The shelves are fully adjustable for whatever you particular needs dictate. The bookcase doors are an impressive 43 inches tall and is topped by a multi-spindle raised panel incise carved back splash, which is often missing from desks like these. This desk is in good condition. Showing minor little nicks and dings typical of an original piece dating just post civil war era. There is a small aggravation on the left hand burl walnut post where the burl has lifted a little bit, but this is normal and is not a big deal. There is also a hair line crack on the bottom of the right hand door, which we would not restore, as it doesn't affect the piece. None of these issues are a big deal, but we mention them for full disclosure. The piece comes with one key, which is for the center drawer. This is an Eastlake secretary from the late 1800s. I think. It's solid wood construction, mostly walnut with walnut burl panels, very tasteful Eastlake geometric details, original wavy glass and beautiful original patina. Three adjustable shelves in the top book case; drop-down writing surface with original felt, two drawers, file bins and pigeon holes; one fixed self in the base. The two locks work with a replacement key, but they are a little sticky, and one of the rosettes that covers the writing panel pivot is missing. Measures: 42 x 85 x 11.5 top, 20 base. I bought this from a private party in DC about 20 years ago and now I'm downsizing a bit, so I hope it finds a good home. for sale probably the nicest period walnut secretary piece to be had. it was advertised as belter some 20-25 years ago at an estate auction in miss. i expect it is mitchell and rammelsburg but it does not matter. it is civil war era probably made circa 1860-1870. the drawer are hand dove tailed for joints and the bottoms are hand chamfered. it is in perfect condition. the drawers are all solid and do not wiggle or wobble. all the drawers and doors fit perfectly. all drawers and doors have functional locks that work perfectly with the original key. there are no seams in the construction. the sides of the lower drawer portion is one board like 18+ inches wide as well as the sides of the bookcase portion. the walnut used in the construction is of the finest quality with wonderful and perfect grain. it as you see has a pierced carved crest or ... morecrown board that is superbly done and matches the carving on the top of the arched doors of the bookcase. inside the cubbies are perfect along with the drawer. it is a 2 piece affair. The bookcase and cubbies section lifts off the base. it sits on the base and is secured with pegs on either side. i expect the leather on the drop front has been replaced. it is in great condition. the whole piece is just about as good as it can get, not damages or blemishes anywhere that are noteworthy. of course all the large key covers are carved as well as the drawer pulls. it is just a very very nice item. i think it cost about 4500 20 some years ago. i have still have several secretaries and have owned many many of them. i have never owned a nicer one. it is probably the tallest one i have ever owned. it is 98.5 inches to the top of the crest with its original porcelain casters. the cabinet portion is 33 inches tall and 44 inches wide, and 19.5 inches deep. it is 65.6 inches from the top of the cabinet to the top of the crest. the outside of the bookcase is 42 inches wide and 122 inches deep. the inside of the bookcase is 35 inches tall, 10 inches deep, and 40.5 inches wide. the secretary

We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous Victorian oversize 107” tall butler’s walnut secretary desk that came in recently. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we ... morereplaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this. In the 1940's these were called"secretary desks" because of the typing height surface that pulls out. The classic design. Excellent tongue and groove construction, and large size make this an excellent executive or home office desk. The typing area is perfect those working on computers. I bought this desk at an Antique Shop in the midwest in the 1970's. Then stripped and restored it. This desk is an unfortunate victim of downsizing. Solid substantial furniture which requires 3 or 4 strong people to move. Solid walnut is deeply carved with fluted columns. The lustrous finish is in excellent condition on this American made antique furniture. The drop front has a saddle leather writing surface. Inside are curly birdseye maple drawer fronts and cubicles. The separate bookcase has an arched crown, shelves adjust on wooden supports.
