Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture 1st Edition Sofa Sideboard Bookcase
I have come into possession of some nice books that I will be auctioning off now and again. This auction is for a 1st edition book titled"Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture" by Thomas H Ormsbee. This is a great smaller pocket type book that covers many facets of the Victorian furniture period in America. It covers the high end pieces that would have been found in the mansions of the time to the more common items found in the farmhouse or the small business man in the village. There are many black and white drawings as examples of the period furniture and then you get the text describing the characteristics of the piece and similar pieces of the time. The book was published in 1952 and does have a lettering system that translates into a price range for the piece. It is interesting to compare the 1952 price to what is being ... morerealized today. Believe or not some pieces have not changed much in price range. This was a former Dunkirk Free Library book but was withdrawn from the shelves in the early 1970s. It has been in a private collection since then. The book is still in pretty good condition with some foxing to the cover. Other than that it is ready for use as a research book again. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. Sometime around 1890. This antique butlers desk is a beautiful piece of furniture that will provide beauty, display, and function to whatever room you decide to display it in. Stunning mahogany wood was used to construct this lovely piece. It is worth noting before we continue the description that we believe this to be a“marriage” The bookcase ... moretop most likely did not originally go with the bottom section. However, they were made roughly around the same time and really look good together today. Marrying a top and bottom is not an uncommon practice. The top section has two adjustable shelves behind two old wavy glass doors. These shelves adjust by sliding in and out of grooves. This section also locks and a key is provided. Below the bookcase top is the actual antique butlers desk section. Closed it appears to be a chest of drawers. But the top drawer opens, the front flips down, and it reveals a wonderful desk interior. Various drawers and nooks are present for storage and the fall has a black leather insert which has recently been replaced. When open, the desk area measures 36.5″ wide x 18″ deep x 30.25″ from the floor. The drawers below were obviously used as some kind of filing system as each drawer has letters of the alphabet inlaid on them. This is an unusual thing to see and gives the piece some character and history. Another unusual trait are the very subtle satinwood string inlays just above the top drawer. Acanthus leaf carvings and Roaring Lions circa 1900. We believe this fine bookcase to be attributed to the work of RJ Horner. This bookcase has its original finish, original glass and beautiful birds-eye maple adorns the inside of the back. Each section has 4 adjustable shelves( each measure 19 1/4 in. wide by 11 1/4 in. deep) with the original metal shelf brackets that are dated: March 16.97 and the tasseled key works all three locks.
