These are from one of the most prominent 19th century pharmacies in New York City who's proprietor is known as"the father of modern pharmacy" and founded the Pharmacy Board of New York. In 1944 an award in his honor was created and the award was conferred upon a meritorious pharmacist each year. The proprietor partnered with Albert Einstein to petition the U.S. on behalf of WWII refugees escaping Nazi Germany. The finish is excellent on flame grain mahogany. A solid mahogany top has been mounted over the crown molding. The top underneath was originally unfinished. The flip open writing surface is inlaid with natural saddle leather, and rests on pull out supports. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and matched grain. There are plugs from relocated pulls. Hand cut square nail heads are visible. The upper bookcase section is removable on this picturesque antique furniture. The doors have a small warp. There are two glass pane doors, with ornamental Gothic arch tops, each door with eight glass panes. Six mahogany stained maple adjustable shelves and back boards. The drawer base has flame mahogany veneers on drawer, original mahogany knobs. The furniture measures 7'6" 89-1/2" tall by 4' 48" wide by 18" deep, the shelves 11" deep. Very good plus condition: original finish, doors with lock, no key. Six panes on one door are new glass replacements, the rest old wavy glass. Small veneer chip top front edge of drawer case. Circa 1960 Yew wood Gothic arches Hairline crack to one pane right door Excellent overall condition, Recently imported from England. This bookcase is made from yew wood. Yew is a native English wood that has a warm color and subtle grain that is speckled with“bird’s eyes” There are so many attractive features to go over on this bookcase and they all combine to form a really handsome piece of furniture! This bookcase was made in England sometime around the year 1960. Perhaps most noticeable and hardest to find in good quality ... morefurniture are the Gothic arches on the glass doors. Inside are two 9.75″ deep adjustable wooden shelves. These shelves adjust with the brass pin system. Below are two drawers that function perfectly and finally a large cabinet section that houses one wooden shelf. Both upper and lower cabinets lock and one key is included. The top and bottom sections separate for easy moving. Small details about this yew wood bookcase add up to reveal the care and skill that went into its construction. A dentil moulded cornice adorns the top. Much more attractive and difficult to make than a straight crown. The two drawers were constructed with dovetailed drawer joints, making them as strong as possible. The pulls are brass plate pulls, a very good quality handle. Finally the bracket feet at the bottom are strong and sturdy. Despite a few minor things this bookcase remains in excellent condition today. There is a small hairline crack to one pane of glass on the right door(shown in pictures) The doors are made up of individual panes of glass. Another example of this bookcase’s quality.
