Tullimonstrum gregarium. was a soft bodied animal. It lived in the ocean that covered much of Illinois during the Pennsylvanian Period(about 300 million years ago) It was probably an active. Swimming carnivore. The flexible body was probably round or oval in cross section. It may have been segmented, but some recent work suggests that it was not. The tail had horizonal fins and a dorsal fin; all three of these fins were triangular. The Tully Monster had a long proboscis. At the end was a"jaw" that contained ... moreeight small, sharp teeth. There is no evidence that the throat went down the proboscis. It seems more likely that the proboscis was a muscular organ used to pass food to the mouth. Near the middle of the body was a transverse bar the passed through the body. This bar had swellings on the end. These may have been the animal's sensory organ. Conn 8H Large Bore Pro Trombone with Valve Section. Custom. Unique. Must See.
Boy I hate to sell this one. But I can't justify hanging onto it as little as I play it. It's a Conn 8H with a custom valve section from a marching baritone that has been set up to connect in place of the slide section. The bore is.557. Which is a nice complement to the.547 bore of the bell section and which makes it the most open valve bone I've ever played with the exception of the Conn 90G. It has a removable nickel leadpipe in the valve section and the original fixed Remington leadpipe in the handslide. There's"Conn wear" on the slide. But it works well and is in good alignment with no significant dents. It's a very good large bore slide trombone in and of itself. The valve section has custom-wrapped tubing with solid bracing. Guard wire on the most exposed of the bends, and a separate tuning slide for the ... morevalve section. I reversed the tubes on the top of the 1st valve slide and lapped in the slide to allow for a thumb-ring to give a bit of intonation control. The first valve slide needs to be worked in a bit, but it does slide with thumb pressure. I never used it for tuning, so I just ran it with standard tuning slide grease so it wouldn't fall out. I'm unable to read the whole serial number due to pitting on the handslide section. While it looks like an"R" number. I'm fairly sure there are missing numbers before the"R" that make it an Abilene horn rather than an Elkhart. It comes in a Getzen valve trombone case that I purchased new specifically for this horn. It's in great shape and it holds all sections of the horn securely. It sure sounds nice. Very authoritative and not as"tubby" as a 90G. With the valve section on. It still has the sound of a big trombone rather than a small baritone. I don't have the technology to record it in a way that would do it justice but trust me, it's just gorgeous. The front is inscribed. The"Mules Relief" railroad was 3' gauge built on a steep grade from nearby Clifton to Austin. A distance of almost 3 miles. It was built in 1881 and lasted until 1889.
