The piece comes in two parts. The four door- four drawer base, and the glass fronted top. It's the perfect mix of aesthetic beauty and practical usefulness and will add a touch of style and elegance to any interiors scheme. The piece has the characteristic Sheraton style inlay to the front with the urns and garlands gracing the front of each door. There is also a thin strip bordering the doors. Drawers and glass fronted doors. If you imagine how this inlay is created you can see how much skilled craftmanship and man hours goes into the making of this fine piece of furniture. Each piece of marquetry inlay design has to be cut out of the softer fruitwood and then embedded into the harder mahogany of the main structure. There is a lot of storage space. The doors on the bottom open out to reveal the large inner space. This door is lockable and comes with a key. The drawers at the top open out cleanly. Then of course there is the fantastic glass fronted top half again with keys. When this opens out you can see the shelves are adjustable so you can store various items. Being glass fronted its a great way to showcase your decorative pieces. Such as porcelain, bronzes and other collectibles. Of course books also look great in this piece. At the top is the classical pediment. This fine piece of furniture is a design classic and will last you for generations and hence makes for a great heirloom. Late 19thC. Satinwood & MOP Inlaid Mahogany Bookcase Arched Doors & Paw Feet
This is an absolutely stunning piece of furniture in amazing condition for the age. This piece dates to the late 1800's. We do not know the maker of this piece or the origin. This bookcase stands 66 3/8" high and has a width at the top of 53.25" The width at the base is 55" The depth at the top is 15" and at the base it has a depth of 17" The main body of this where the books are held measures 51" w x 14" d x 57.75" h. The arched doors are flanked on the sides by 3/4 columns capped with ornate finnials. There are bands of string inlay decorating the fronts of the doors. There is a third finnial capped column between the two doors as well. Each column has beautiful designs made from satinwood and accented with mother of pearl inlay. This design is also seen above the doors. The sides have raised ... moretrim molding and the top has an inlaid stip around the front and side and dental inlaid molding beneath it. The base boasts stunning winged.Bracket paw feet. The back has bun feet. The inside has a depth of 12" and has four shelves. The original round pegs have been replaced with dowels. There are some losses to the trim molding on one side of this. There do not appear to be any losses to the inlaid areas. There is a small gap on the left side between the door and the center column. There are age and use associated surface scratches and dings. These are very minor and do not detract from the piece at all. There are losses to the wood below the finial on the right side column. This can be seen in the last picture. This is a stunning bookcase that was obviously well cared for. This is a previously owned item and it is being sold as shown. A 5 stack Globe Wernicke Grade 598 solid mahogany with rich finish barrister with brass trim. 7 pieces including the top and base. All original wavy glass with old brass knobs and bands around each section. Each section is labeled with the stickers. The bottom is a stepback unit and has an unusually big section which is labeled E. This refers to the size and is desireable at 13 1/2 inches deep and very tall. Can accomodate large law books. Photo albums and collectibles. There is slight wear to the top cap piece which is in one of the photos. Someone may have left a plant on top and the ring from water appeared. No damage to wood here just finish. It cannot be seen when the bookcase is together. From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. It does have a few tell tale features caused by the damp concrete that we want to declare. Even though they are no longer really an issue. The very bottom of the backboard has rippled plywood(see photo) when placed against the wall you will not see at all, and the very bottoms of the veneered sides were lifting and have been reglued. Because of this we are listing this secretary for about half its value. The secretary has original finish, original brass hardware. This auction is for a neat vintage and very well made Mahogany Open Bookcase or Bookshelves from England. The look of the unit to me looks kinda like Art Deco but also looks kinda like a Mid Centrury Modern piece. So YOU be the Judge. This I can say, it's a very well made piece and in good overall condition. It has Solid Mahogany sides, shelves and back-splash, only the back panel is a veneer. It hasn't any burn marks, water marks(circles) on the shelves. It has some very pretty Mahogany wood grains showing on both the shelves and sides. You can store a lot of books and display many items on the shelves. Overall it's 30" wide. 9" deep at it's feet and 35" tall. All of the shelves are"fixed" in place and do not adjust and each one is 29 3/4" Starting at the top shelf and counting down, the depths ... moreof the shelves are 5 3/8" 7 3/8" 8 1/8" and 8 1/8" The heights or distance bewteen the shelves are 8 1/8" 9" and 10 3/8" The top shelf has a 2 3/4" back-splash around it. It has some blemishes to the finish(light or dark spots or marks) to the shelves and sides as well as some nicks.
