It has a wonderful Victorian carving of a cupid head surrounded by a large array of acanthus leaf carving over the center door. There are four large claw feet on the front of the bookcase. It has its original wavy glass in all 3 doors. There are twelve adjustable shelves. The hardware is solid brass original to the piece. I have fully restored and refinished this bookcase inside and outside so it is in excellent condition. This is a quality piece of furniture but I do not know who made it. This measures a total height of 80 in( 6 ft 8 in) A total width of 34 inches and a total depth at the deepest portion of 14 3/4 inches, and the approximate weight of this piece is 55 lbs. The top of this etagere offers a incised carved pediment that rests between an arch. With raised carved panels of walnut accenting each side. Below is the vintage replacement mirror that is in excellent condition and measures 29 in high by 16 inches wide. Finely turned walnut spindle posts with turned finials, flank the mirror and offer support for the display shelves on each side. Below the mirror is an additional carved display shelf that is supported by a pierced carving. The largest shelf rests below the mirror and boasts of feather walnut and offers a unique small storage drawer below with early hand-cut dovetailed joints, and an open carved small gallery at the back. Elegant out-swept carved legs support the larger shelf and the display shelf at the base with the front legs having pierced carvings at about midway. Probably done at the same time as the finish. The spots that might have revealed the maker name have paint on them so I am selling it as maker unknown. In addition to the 2 sections, it comes with the original top or crown, and a base with drawer. It also features metal side straps between each section and the scissor mechanism for the doors. No problems with the 2 glass doors. In fact, I see no problems at all. With the square straight legs it is very mission looking and being from about 100 years ago, I think we can safely call it authentic mission furniture in every way except the finish, although a lot of mission furniture WAS this color when it was new. The joints are all tight and all sections lock together easily and correctly. While only a 2 stack, it is a big 2 stack with each section able to take books as much as 13 1/2 inches tall. The over all measurement are 34 inches wide as most of these are, and with base and crown a total of 45 inches tall. It is a full 14 inches deep from knobs to back. I am listing this as local pick up only. BUT there are shipping/delivery options for you to chose from. RI delivery is $50 MA or CT. $100 If you are beyond those states. I would still deliver to most of the rest of New England, all of NJ, parts of PA that are East of Harrisburg and parts of NY that are East of Binghamton for $200. This lovely piece is the perfect mix of decorative beauty and practical functionality to make for a vintage design classic. Ostensibly it is of course a bookcase of course you can use it to hold other items. It looks particuarly good with decorative items- statues, vases etc- in them. However, for myself, being the bookish type I have aone in my home with nothing but lovely, fading works of literature in them. The shelves are adjustable to suit meaty tomes or smaller paperbacks. The shelves work on a slat system so you can adjust them to whatever height you like for whatever you like. From'War and Peace' to the'World's Smallest Book of Poetry' this bookcase is perfect. The inlay is made from various fruitwoods- satinwood. Rosewood, applewood- to create a beautiful affect. The fruitwoods are softer hence there use as inlay within the harder mahogany. The level of the craftmanship on this is absolutely superb, both strucurally in that its very solid, and also with the intricacy of the inlay. The close up pictures of the inlay work hopefully illustrates the level of craftmanship with patterns of scrolling branches. Urns and flower motifs. They would be the highlight of any room and due to their solid construction will last for many generations more. I hope the photos do this stunning piece some justice. It is certainly more impressive in the flesh. The piece has an air of classical refinement to the design with the clean lines and the pediment top. At the top is the draped garlands marquetry inlay in satinwood complemented by the horizontal lines to the front. The great thing about these is their flexibility with the adjustable shelf system so you can store items of different sizes. Of course these are conventionally bookcases but you can also use them to showcase decorative items such as porcelain and bronze. They are indeed a perennial design classic and look great in both classic and contemporary interiors. The bookcase is offered in perfect condition ready for home use right away and we will ship to anywhere in the world. The joints are solid and sturdy with no wobbles. The finish is lovely also. ANTIQUE FRENCH COUNTRY 18 c. OAK BIBLIOTHEQUE BUFFET BOOKCASE Formally the top part of an 18th century French Buffet a Deux Corps currently used as a bookcase. The bottom part was lost through the centuries and the top was raised on bun feet and rounded apron was added to the bottom. This transformation took place a while ago and the wood shows some aging and doesn’t stand out. Two doors open wide. Revealing the interior, which is about 52” from side to side ... moreand 13” deep and 52” tall. We have added two 1 ½” thick heavy duty pine shelves. Which are completely adjustable and will hold a lot of weight. The shelves were aged to look old and will not stand out. The front doors are covered with gathered French country style fabric. Which can be removed so that you can see the interior through the glass. The lock is in working condition, complete with the key. The bibliotheque measures about 59” at the widest point and about 20 ¾” deep. It stands up about 63 ½” tall and the top surface can be used as a shelf. Displaying collectable items. Very heavy. Solid and well built item. The primer material is oak. However, secondary woods was also used on the sides and the back, which is common for 18th Century furniture. We were using it in our office for files and fabric samplers and it is hard to find a bookcase which will fit oversized files and provide such great access as this item does. antique r j horner mahogany griffin three door bookcase
i just purchased another horner bookcase at over twice the price i am starting this one. i do not have room for both. But if this one does not sell, i guess i will have to put one on the porch. my house is full. anyway, for auction is a fabulous r j horner solid mahogany three door bookcase with mahogany shelves original to the piece. it has two fierce griffin at either end of the bookcase and three griffin head situated at the center and above each door. these heads are part of the finely carved freize near the top of the bookcase. it has wonderful molding along the top and below the carving and sits on finely carved feet. it is 6 feet wide over 65 inches tall without casters and 15 inches deep at the widest part at the griffins nose. it has the original key and all the door locks function perfectly. all original and no defects or issues ... moreto report. a hard to find bookcase. the pictures i have taken are terrible and do not do the piece justice and do not show the intricate and detailed carving as it should. sorry, i just can't seem to take a picture worth a flip. it can be picked up at my home or shipped. shipping expense is the buyers responsiblity. i would be glad to facilitate shipment or help in anyway in that regard or you can arrange it for yourself. good luck. ps. the buy it now price is 1500 less than one exactly like it sold for about one year ago on live auction not to mention the 18 percent buyers premium which made it almost 9500. finally for sale a very rare model r j horner double secretary or side by side bookcase with a wonderful very thick drop front and a great set of cubbies. i have been collecting antiques for 5 decades and have owned 100's of r j horner pieces and have seen thousands. But this is the only double secretary by him like this one i have ever seen. maybe i have not been at the right place or right time and you may own 20 of them, but this is the only one i have seen and therefore i believe it to be a very rare model. at any rare it is a great piece, original finish as you can see the finish is crazing a good bit. the grain and color of the piece is great with a great patina so i would not recommend stripping it under any circumstance. as you see hopefully the secondaries are birdseye maple which about every mahogany horner piece i have has ... morebirdseye. my camera is old, i am old and the pictures suck. they are too dark and do not show the huge lions head in the top well nor the standing griffins under the drop front. the top drawer is contoured serpentine top to bottom and the two lower drawers concave end to end. the freeze(sp) at the top and sides is contoured serpentine top to bottom and there is a neat scroll over the top of the big griffin on top with carved ends. there are ionic twisted columns on either side of the curved glass upper door compartment. the piece at the top and bottom has great lines and form concave forms in the center of the top and bottom sections. everything original as far as i know including hardware. i have owned this piece many years and it cost a pretty penny way back when. the best i remember, it has inventory nos. on the back and it used to have a piece of an r j horner paper label on the back. i have not looked at its back for longer than many of you have been alive and it is too full and heavy for me to move to check if it is still there, however, i guarantee it to be r j horner at his finest. it is quite heavy. when i moved it years ago i struggled, doubtful i can budge it now. it h

J2919 This is a quarter sawn oak open bookcase circa 1910. These are really hard to find. Overall it is 16 inches deep. 22 inches wide across the front, and 437inches tall. The shelves are 16 inches deep and 18 inches wide in clearance. The clearance height between the shelves is 10 1/2 inches for the lowest shelf and 9 inches for the balance. It would make a great entertainment center. It is constructed of solid white oak and has been lovingly refinished in a warm medium oak finish by our refinishing shop to provide many more years of enjoyment. The figured solid walnut pedal pump organ by the Estey Organ Company of Brattleboro, Vermont USA, standing on the original castors with decorative galleried back and greek key detailing, the centre now housing two shelves acting as a bookcase, the flip up top opening to reveal the organ keys with gilt painted makers name and 36 white keys, and 25 black keys. The internals of the organ have obviously all been removed but the pumps remain for decorative effect. These doors have two panels and a shelf behind for storage. The top sits neatly upon the base and is slightly set back having two large glazed doors.
