This lovely piece is the perfect mix of decorative beauty and practical functionality to make for a vintage design classic. Ostensibly it is of course a bookcase of course you can use it to hold other items. It looks particuarly good with decorative items- statues, vases etc- in them. However, for myself, being the bookish type I have aone in my home with nothing but lovely, fading works of literature in them. The shelves are adjustable to suit meaty tomes or smaller paperbacks. The shelves work on a slat system so you can adjust them to whatever height you like for whatever you like. From'War and Peace' to the'World's Smallest Book of Poetry' this bookcase is perfect. The inlay is made from various fruitwoods- satinwood. Rosewood, applewood- to create a beautiful affect. The fruitwoods are softer hence there use as inlay within the harder mahogany. The level of the craftmanship on this is absolutely superb, both strucurally in that its very solid, and also with the intricacy of the inlay. The close up pictures of the inlay work hopefully illustrates the level of craftmanship with patterns of scrolling branches. Urns and flower motifs. They would be the highlight of any room and due to their solid construction will last for many generations more. The piece comes in two parts. The four door- four drawer base, and the glass fronted top. It's the perfect mix of aesthetic beauty and practical usefulness and will add a touch of style and elegance to any interiors scheme. The piece has the characteristic Sheraton style inlay to the front with the urns and garlands gracing the front of each door. There is also a thin strip bordering the doors. Drawers and glass fronted doors. If you imagine how this inlay is created you can see how much skilled craftmanship and man hours goes into the making of this fine piece of furniture. Each piece of marquetry inlay design has to be cut out of the softer fruitwood and then embedded into the harder mahogany of the main structure. There is a lot of storage space. The doors on the bottom open out to reveal the large inner space. This door is lockable and comes with a key. The drawers at the top open out cleanly. Then of course there is the fantastic glass fronted top half again with keys. When this opens out you can see the shelves are adjustable so you can store various items. Being glass fronted its a great way to showcase your decorative pieces. Such as porcelain, bronzes and other collectibles. Of course books also look great in this piece. At the top is the classical pediment. This fine piece of furniture is a design classic and will last you for generations and hence makes for a great heirloom. This piece is offered in perfect condition and has just come back from the restorers where it had a repolish and hence is ready for home use immediately. English Regency Mahogany Antique Chiffonier[Secretary Desk. Bookcase] First quarter of the 19th Century In excellent well preserved condition Item# 130004OTY21 This is a very fine English Regency Chiffonier crafted during the first half of the 19th Century. Formed of dense well figured mahogany. The profile is square and strict, a piece delivering an almost intimidating stocky presence. The diminutive stature of the bookcase is typical of the Chiffonier, three graduated levels of shelving with triple-beaded edge moldings of the solid, the gallery joined with exposed dovetails along the side and the case joined with dovetails at the bottom. Two original hand filed steel screws still secure the bookcase to the lower case. Flipping over original hand cast brass hinges. The top of the case rests on two square lopers to reveal a flat gilt-tooled ... moreleather writing surface. A small tab at the back of this surface allows the back of the desk to rise and reveal a small compartment beneath the writing surface. This desk portion locks, protecting papers and valuables inside with ease. The two doors completing the lower area of the case feature replaced pleated fabric. These opening over original hinges and hardware to reveal a shelved interior(two replaced shelves) with a deep space. The case rests over original lion paw feet, these executed with utmost precision- even the backs of the feet, areas that would almost never be seen, are finished carefully with highly detailed carving throughout. For anyone passionate about English antique furniture. This is a very fine acquisition. Functional and a very useful piece, it makes a wonderful desk, bookcase, entertainment center and console table. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a"butler's desk" in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this. Vintage English Solid Mahogany 2 Tier Rolling Bookcase Table Old Library Piece Offered here is a vintage solid mahogany English rolling bookcase. It features 2 shelves and sits atop coasters so that it can be rolled about. The top shelf goes through the piece entirely while the bottom shelf is divided in 2 equal size shelfs on each side of the piece. It is in excellent condition and is quite sturdy and ready to use. It does have some light surface scratches but nothing that would not be expeceted of a vintage piece of this age. It can also be used as a table so it can serve more than one purpose. It stands 26 inches tall and the top measures 26 1/2 inches wide by 16 1/2 inches deep. The middle shelf measures 22 inches by 14 inches. The original finish is very well preserved, showing the natural irregularities and knots in the beautiful natural grain, similar to our birdseye maple. There is just enough wear to the finish for a little antique character. Waxed and polished. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the glowing patina. Individual panes of glass in classic grill work doors have a little waviness to show their age. There is a crack to one of the wavy glass individual panes to the lower left door. See photos.
