This impressive bookcase measuring 9 feet long has a carved edge top over three sections divided by heavily carved columns to include cherubs and foliage each with original oak shelves and raised on a plinth base. CA. building is pictured above) This was one of a group of bookcases that were brought over to America on a cargo ship and ended up on the third floor of this office building(up 6 flights of stairs) The third floor had been home to VolCafe' Coffee Inc. which is a coffee bean importer, for the last 30 years. The owner of the company told me the actual city in India these came from but I don't remember it. This is my favorite of the 5 bookcases I still have. This is a superb oak French bookcase. Circa 1885. Some very fine carving all over this piece with leafs, berries, flowers, etc. in an overall organic motif. Sometimes called a hunt board by some dealers. Interior has been covered by the previous owner in reddish material; I have left it on as he looks nice but can be removed if you like. Three shelves are all movable on this two piece cabinet. Drawer pulls are carved integral to the drawer fronts. Note the bottom doors are different carvings from each other in heavy relief(shelf in bottom section) Carvings on this piece are in excellent condition with just the expected minor rub or loss. It is an unusual cabinet/bookcase in a classical design. The cabinet has carved black walnut and burled walnut doors in the front of the bookcase. Across the top is a carved crown and on the top corners of the doors is an applied carving(see photos) The front doors has a flat very heavy glass panel. Antique Bookcase Large 7 Feet Tall Bold Ornately Carved Wood & Floated Glass
This is the most ornately carved antique you have ever seen. I've had three antique dealers says the same. The front is intricately hand carved with reliefs of lions, leather, scroll work, and of course the Atlas(Zuess? figures holding up the world. Wood is possibly poplar. It's very soft white wood with original dark stain. Glass is original floated, hence wavy with tiny air bubbles. Two original keys also included. Bookcase comes with German penny that was found in lower middle drawer. I was told owners do this to give provenance along the way. Each time it sells. So I will be adding a penny to the continuation! This bookcase was originally auctioned from world famous Red Baron's to The Yellowstone Club. I thought I had lost it forever. It was made in France around 1890 and is still beautiful today. Large barley twist columns flank the sides and hand carvings adorn most of the piece. The lower cabinet doors feature stunning carvings depicting the hunt and fishing. The handles of the drawers are carved leaves. The upper and lower doors lock with included keys. The bookcase section houses two wooden shelves that are adjustable. ... moreThe bookcase is in two pieces for easier transporting. Overall the condition is very good and the bookcase is quite sturdy. There are several cosmetic age splits to the bookcase as you would expect from a solid wood piece of this age. The largest two are on the lower side panels and some smaller ones are present on the counter top and the upper right barley twist column. The left side crown also has some older damage to it(shown in pictures) These cosmetic issues add to the character of the bookcase and do not detract from it. It is functional and clean to go right into your home. This spectacular antique French Renaissance bookcase is breath taking! The upper interior shelves are 10.5" deep. Each shelf adjusts via an alligator bracket system. The doors have stunning carvings to them. The drawer handles are carved leaves. Here you can see the lovely carved crown of the bookcase.
