Having just been restored by my very experienced restorer(50 years) it is consequently in excellent condition and is ready for immediate use in the home or for retailing in a prestigious showroom or fair. The second thing that strikes you about this bookcase is the colour and patination. The cabinetmaker that made this bookcase chose some very good quality timbers for the job. This has resulted all these years later in a bookcase with a gorgeous soft rich warm colour and patination that can only be attained by mahogany of this age and quality. Thirdly are the proportions. The design of this bookcase is just right and the bookcase benefits from having a good balance. Meaning that it“sits” well with a real“presence” Now we know everything on ebay is“fantastic” glorious” superb” brilliant” magnificent” greatest” resplendent” superior” etc etc but when we say this is a very good bookcase we mean it. The bottom is a stepback unit and has an unusually big section which is labeled E. This refers to the size and is desireable at 13 1/2 inches deep and very tall. Can accomodate large law books. Photo albums and collectibles. There is slight wear to the top cap piece which is in one of the photos. Someone may have left a plant on top and the ring from water appeared. No damage to wood here just finish. It cannot be seen when the bookcase is together. From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The drawers of this item are hard to open(but they do open) and there are scratches and needs more cleaning. Because of this we are listing this secretary for less than half its value. The secretary has original brass hardware. It has a really nice 8 1/2" tall turned finial on top of the traditional'broken arch' top. It has two fixed shelves in the bookcase top behind glass doors with original fret work over the glass. It has a big mechanical lid or writing surface in good condition but for a tiny veneer chip(no cracks) The interior of the desk is serpentine shaped with 3 drawers. This is a very nice revolving tabletop shelf. It could be for small books or nic nacs. It is 15 1/2" tall by 12" wide. The cubby holes are 6 1/2"x6" In comes in two parts. The top shelves(photos 1 to 10) that swivel on the base(photo 11 and 12) I took different shades of the top piece to show how it was constructed and that there are two seperations between boards, but book case is very sturday, not loose.
