This is a stunning probably earlier 19th century Chippendale style solid mahogany cabinet. It consists of two pieces. The top has two large doors with 20 individual panes of glass which are individually glazed and create with the unusual framing a very interesting pattern. Some of the of the panes have been replaced. However, there are more old glass panels than new. A few parts of the framing around glass have also been replaced/repaired. The doors will lock with the original lockset and key. The base has two hand dovetailed and very roomy drawers.and the secondary wood is pine. There is a cool carved and shaped skirt in front and on the sides and the legs are cabriole which end in carved ball and claw feet.which are fabulous and detailed. The drawer hardware is new. This superb small Antique Mahogany Desktop Bookcase dates I believe to around 1900 or thereabouts. It measures approximately 12 inches across by around 6.75 inches deep minimum and around 9.5 inches maximum. The Bookcase stands approximately 5 inches high and weighs around 529 grams. Other than some minor dings and scuffs the Bookcase is in lovely vintage condition. Requiring only a polish or wax to optimise its appearance. Its styling detals indicate that it originated in the Netherlands or possibly Belgium. The exposed woodwork is a mix of solid mahogany and mahogany veneer. It has a recent professionally done restoration and it is in excellent antique/restored condition. All parts are straight and solid and fit together as they should. The doors open and close smoothly. There is no indication that major repairs were done during restoration-it is all old. Original wood with no woodworm or dry rot and also all old, original hardware. The piece features a rich and striking grain. And has been accomplished in mahogany, a highly desirable wood. The mahogany has been beautifully faded over the years, by the sun, and looks fabulous. It has 13 pane astragal glazing to the top doors and as a sign of quality all the glass has bevilled edges. This bookcase has original shelves, locks, glass, etc. and the shelves are adjustable. Partner in the cabinet makers of Trapnell& Gane. Became sole proprietor and gave the company his own name. Other than that, it’s all original, dating from the 1850s era. It has all the original hand-chamfered backboards on it. It starts with an ogee molded crown top, and has two beautiful wavy glass doors with two shelves inside, two hand-cut dovetail drawers, a flip down flame mahogany matched veneer lid that opens to reveal a green felt writing surface, which we have replaced, and pencil trays on the side. The top drawer opens to support the writing surface. Below that are two more large drawers with wooden knobs and traditional elephant style scroll feet. The overall size is 43.5 inches wide on the base, 21 inches deep, 32 inches high to the writing surface, and an unusually tall 83 inches high overall. It’s in mind-boggling condition for a piece this old. There only minor chips here and there, and it has an amazing patina. This desk comes in two sections for transport.
