ANTIQUE 19TH C VICTORIAN FLAME MAHOGANY COLUMN SECRETARY BUREAU BOOKCASE DESK
Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. The desk top writing surface when open has a surface height of 33 1/2 inches and measures a nice large 39 3/4 inches wide by 14 3/4 inches front to back with pull out supports on both sides to support

The bookcase has mahogany"piecrust" bandings to the Gothic doors and the cornice. Original wavy glass panels. Interior with two adjustable maple shelves with flame mahogany fronts. Two ogee drawers are below. The butler's desk was a top drop down front with cubbyholes and single drawer. New green felt writing surface. Two long drawers below over case on mahogany bracket feet. Furniture measures 7'3" 87" tall by 3'10" 46" wide by 29" deep, the shelves 9" deep. Very good plus condition, very nicely refinished. This is a beautiful antique drop front desk. It is made in the Larkin style. I have not seen any marks that indicate a maker. The piece is dark wood and may be either mahogany or cherry. I am not a wood expert. There is a mirror and two candle holder/sconce shelves for detail, there are also shelves for books. The piece has some wear and tear on the wood, see pics, but nothing huge. It needs a good cleaning! There is no lock detail on the front and no locking mechanism. The last picture shows a brass detail piece that can be added if you like. It will be included with the item. Above pair glazed doors divided by unusual inlaid oval and half-oval mullions into individual panes; three interior shelves, lighted/electrified; lower section has line-inlaid and cross-banded fall front opening to writing compartment fitted with two narrow drawers over eight arcaded pigeonholes above eight short drawers, all inlaid, centering inlaid prospect door; baise inset writing surface; two aligned, half-width case drawers over three graduated full-width drawers, all cockbeaded; shaped bracket feet. I am selling my antique mahogany bookcase that I have had for so many years. We are downsizing to retire. It solid wood. Has hand carved finials and topper and the size is graduated. Each shelf gets wider as you go down the curio. It is 36" wide and 70" tall. Very versatile. I have used this as a curio étagère with do dads on it. Also used it as a bookcase for years. Height of shelving is PERFECT. 13" tall on the bottom shelf. Next up is 12" next up is 11" and so on. Most obvious is the fret work on the glass doors which is done in arches and ovals. This type of pattern is hard to find because it is very hard and time consuming to make. Inside these doors are three adjustable glass shelves. Just below the top section is a small pull-out slide with a leather top. This can be used as an extra“table” space for guests to set drinks on during gatherings. The wooden doors at the bottom house one fixed shelf. Both doors lock with an included key. English 1870 Antique Mahogany Bookcase. Wavy Glass Doors, Adjustable Shelves. Item# C-19845. Hand crafted in England about 1870. This mahogany bookcase has old wavy glass panes in the doors. The finish is in excellent condition on figured mahogany with pine sides. There are numerous shrinkage separations from age and mars at the edges for antique character. There is a warp to the right door. See photos. Shelves adjust by sliding into slots. Below the pull out shelf, drawers have tiny hand cut dovetail joints on this historic furniture. Hardware is solid brass. The lock in the upper door works with a key. The upper section is a separate piece for easier moving. Measurements are 50" wide. 19" deep and 6' 8" tall.
