France during the 1920s and converted into a bookcase. The front doors have glass on top with geometric designs in oak on the lower half of them. The cornice is beautifully carved. When opened the piece reveals six shelves that are held in place by a bracket system which makes the shelves easily removable/ adjustable. ... moreThere is a latch on the left hand side of the interior that holds the left door closed. This piece was well cared for over the last 80 years and shows little sign of wear and tear. It would certainly compliment any home or office. The large cornice has a beautifully carved face. The fluted columns look great! All of the shelves are fully adjustable. Note the four pegs that hold the center piece to the side. This is how most of the armoire is held together. This latch secures the left door. The geometric designs on the lower portion of the doors is a traditional feature of pieces made in Brittany. These turned feet are solid oak and very sturdy. Including the key hole covers are original.As you can see the hardware is the icing on this cake! The original drawer locks are all in place and in excellent working order using the beautiful key I had made.The top of the dresser has incredible patina and some of the finest grain figuring you will see.The top is first class all the way. All of the drawers were totally rebuilt and slide like silk. The drawers feature the sought after dovetail joinery. I restored the finish all by hand using a custom rich stain to achieve the highlighted rich burgundy followed by many. Many coats of hand ... morerubbed varnish.When you rub your hands over the finish you will feel the superb depth and notice the beauty of the amazing maple grains. This is a"bonnet top" dresser meaning the top two drawers protrude and overhand the lower level drawers. The sides have great architectural design with the paneled construction.Like any fine antique. This piece has minor imperfections and character marks in the wood. The posts which hold the drawer handle in place are brass plated steel, some of the plating has worn off after 135 plus years.The photos show casters in the legs, they will not be included.I find they tend to split the legs.There is a knot depression on the upper left side(see photo) I think it adds character and figuring just like the top of the dresser. I was told that reupholstering does not effect value as it's a very common practice and whoever did it was smart enough to leave the underside all original. The settee and chair are hand carved. Hand inlay with many different woods and with mother of pearl! They have hand carved ball and claw feet and very unique shapes. That more then makes up for ugly fabric. They have a folk art feel and are gorgeous! These photo's don't do the beautiful inlay ... moreor these pieces justice! They have original brass antique nails and"rose-head nails" hand crafted by blacksmiths; which can be identified by irregular. Rose shaped heads. Most of the keys here are the hollow barrel variety but there are 3 keys here with solid barrels and they are also rather interesting. One of them is a Keen Kutter.
