In 1886 he succeeded Johann Friedrich Horner as professor of ophthalmology at Zurich and made contributions involving pathological anatomy of the eye, as well as in treatment of eye-related lesions. In 1885 he clinically described senile macular degeneration. His name is associated with several medical eponyms, that include: Haab's reflex" which is another name for pupillary light reflex, and"Haab's magnet" a powerful magnet used for removing metallic particles from the eye. Offered for sale is a wonderful manuscript or book sleeve. Vintage 19th to early 20th Century. Modern versions would be called a"folio" or"book cover, but it is not clear exactly what was contained herein. The sleeve is soft glove leather, tooled and accented with 22K gold and blue, green, yellow and black in intricate designs adorning the cover. It evokes the Arabian Nights and scenes of Marrakesh! The sleeve is 12 7/8" high and. Closed, it is 9 3/8" wide. When laid open, it is 18 7/8" wide. The color is a warm, orangey brick-red, identical to the first photograph and the last two. The lighting has unfortunately introduced a bluish tone to the photographs(particularly 6, 7 and 8) however, the true color is a brick red. The designed tooled into this folio are outstanding. There is very little loss of the gold ... moreor the colored paint. And hardly any scuffing of the soft leather. The inside is marked"OR22CARATS. There are a few watermarks on the area that covers the spine of a book and on the upper left just outside the main design, but these are not serious. Otherwise, there is no staining or discoloration, no rips or tears, no fraying or scuffs. The leather is very, very soft and reminds one of an expensive glove leather. The origin of this lovely piece is unknown. Other than it was discovered in an estate. It is a rare and gorgeous antique, one that could not be found duplicated in any research. Antique Sterling Silver Engrave Decorated Vesta or Book Match Case from Birmingham dated 1928 This Antique Vesta or book match case measures approximately 1 7/8 inches or 47 mm across the width of its body from side to side by 2 3/8 inches or 6 1 mm in length from its hinge to the front catch and it is a fraction under 3/8 an inch or 8 mm deep from back to front. The Vesta or book match case is made from sterling silver that has been internally gilded or gold plated in a rectangular shape with a five section piano hinged lid that has clip over catch on its front edge. The case opens to reveal an internal sterling silver frame on its lower base that holds a book of matches in place and the outer lid has been superbly bright cut engrave decorated with scrolled foliage within a decorative border around a central circular cartouche that has been ... moreengraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below. The inner case has been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, T.W.M- Anchor- Lion Passant- D T.W.M is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of Thomas William Martin. No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the decoration and definition are very crisp, the hinge is working perfectly, the case opens with ease and clicks tightly shut, the internal gilding is not worn through, the silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as the match case is a used antique it does have several small shallow dents around its body and lid along with some minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and as the case is in the totally original used condition that it was found a good clean would enhance it greatly. Condition there are a few areas of damage detailed below pic 3 there is some missing infil below the sliding lid pic 4. Top of the pic there is a chip to the corner of the sliding lid and sliver of wood missing from the side of the box extending 1 1/2 inches the bottom part of the pic there is a chip to the side of the box 5/8th inch. pic 5 shows a chip some nibbling to the base of the spine pic 6. The piece is entirely hand sewn; soft black velvet was used for the cover and the interior squares which hold the needles, the aged rosy salmon-colored interior fabric has a silky feel, but I don't believe it's silk; exterior edges are trimmed in silk ribbon which has deteriorated with age. Machine Age BIBLE BOOK STAND PATENTED 1895 Victorian Steampunk Cast Iron Antique
This antique bible stand came from a Vermont estate and is in very good antique condition. All of the thumbscrews are intact and all areas of adjustment seem to be functioning as the way they were when manufactured. There is a patent date on the underside of December 10.18)95. All four little casters on the feet are intact(you can't see them as they are in the snow which provided the best backdrop) This stand can be disassembled quite easily and I can ship it for quite a bit less than what some people have charged in the past. FOR SALE: Antique Church Pew Bible or Song Book holder. This piece is made of oak and the wood is in amazing condition with the original patina. Each measures nearly 32" long and each end braket measures 11 1/4" vertically. There are pine inserts which slide into place at the bottom of the holders. These too have a great patina and wear marks where years of books rubs have been placed. You also recieve two communion glass holders, each has three holes. Postage $15.00
