The front cover includes a black& white litho of Annie Laurie from early 1900's, but the copyright date is unledgible. There is also a short verse by Longfellow next to the photo. The publisher price was 25 cents. The back cover also includes the name of the small country store that carried the Blacko brand tablets. Madras8 Antique Carved Madras Work Needle Book English* Circa 1820 This little needle book is engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles on both sides. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It has a lovely mellow patina and grain pattern. It opens like a book and inside are little pages of finely woven wool to hold the needles. The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. It measures 1 3/8" by 1 7/8" closed and ties together with silk ribbons(all original) It's English and dates to the early 19th century. Third edition, two title pages, both lose. French text.A later edition of a much larger work abridged for the juvenile market and published in the series'Bibliotheque de la Jeunesse Chretienne' de Charlevoix was a French traveller and historian who apparently never visited Japan but relied mainly on Kaempher's work.

Up for auction is an antique 1911 hardback book"That Printer of Udell's" by Harold Bell Wright. The book is in excellent condition with only a tiny bit of wear along the top and bottom outside spine of the book(please see detailed zoomed pic of outer spine) The front cover is in excellent condition. With the oft missing picture of the older gentleman on the front still completely intact and beautiful. The back cover of the book has one white spot on it about the size of a large pencil nub. Other than that the cover is in wonderful condition, especially since the book is 102 years old! The inside binding is nice and tight. With no pulling away from the spine that I can see. Most of the pages are in beautiful condition with only a couple having a few smudges here and there, and a few having a small amount of water marks showing ... moreon the bottom, probably 1 1/2" corner of about 10-11 pages, but nothing that covers any of the words. There are two nice glossy illustrations in the book as well. All in all a wonderful antiquarian book to add to any collection or just as a nice decorative piece for the house. This sale is for volume 2. The back cover is separated from the book but is present. Front cover is loose. One blank page is disconnected. Inside of book has a sweet old smell. Pictures tell the rest. The Spectator was a daily publication founded by and in England. Lasting from 1711 to 1712. Each"paper" or"number" was approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run consisted of 555 numbers, beginning on 1 March 1711. These were collected into seven volumes. I'd look at this book as a collectible. Not as a hymnal to be used every sunday. with that in mind I would consider this book to be in display condition. those with the same thought process as a rock will want to grab the book and riffle through the pages with no consideration to the age, and historic value of the book. There are no editions listed in WorldCat and there are no other original printings available for sale on internet book searches(ABE. ILAB, Amazon, etc. The book was owned by Quaker friends of Tong Sing Kow. The Bell Family Papers. 1754-1967, are in the Friends Collection and Earlham College Archives. The archive has letters from Bell to Tong. The pencil notes in the book state that the frontis picture is not Tong Sing Kow. And on page 13 clarifying an incident with a sick Chinese worker that Bell was involved in. Tong Sing Kow went onto live in America for twenty- four years. The Mirror has age stains/spots& is slightly loose in the framing. The original wheels on the bottom are in very good condition& still work well. The Shelves are sturdy& Most of the screws& the metal brackets that hold the shelving are modern. The 4 lock/key holes& some of the other hardware are original to my knowledge. But I have not found the correct key for the locks. I believe the Glass Door still has the original Glass. The Drop Down door for the desk is divided into 2 sections with a slight opening in between the top& bottom decorated with fancy wood applique designs. My Mother had this desk refinished in the 1960's which is why it's in such good looking condition today. It's been well cared for over the years. Up for auction is a very well-preserved and early edition of Captain Marryatts classic seafaring adventure. SNARLEYYOW: or. THE DOG FIEND. By Captain Marryatt. Published in New York by D. Appleton& Company in 1864. 419 pages plus publishers catalogue on rear. A very solid and clean Civil War-era edition of Marryatts nautical tale. Set in the closing years of the 17th century, after the overthrow of King James, and featuring Captain Cornelius Vanslyperken, the commander of a vessel who hunts for smugglers in the English channel. Book bound in green pebbled cloth with blind-stamped image of Neptune and trident on front and rear cover. Title gilt-stamped on spine below Marryatts Works.
