This outstanding stacking desk bookcase ... moreis one of the nicest we have ever seen. It has leaded glass windows in the top two sections below the molded top. The carved fall board has a key that opens or locks the desk section. Inside are two strong desk lid supports and a nice set of pigeon holes with a single pencil drawer-fitted interior. The desk section sits above two full width drawers. The top drawer is shaped to fit the curve. The second drawer is carved to accent the fall board. Both drawers have original brass handles. The lowest section is an extra tall one with a"blind" door or wood paneled door to prevent breakage from feet. The entire piece sits on a molded base section. Quartersawn oak is showcased through the entire piece which is in excellent condition. I believe this case was made by the Viking Company. Overall dimensions are 34 wide, 15 deep, and 69 high. Although we have sold hundreds of interesting barrister bookcases over the years, we have never seen this model before. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. The doors glide smoothly while opening& closing. If you put very heavy things on the top it does put some pressure on the hinge part that makes the doors open& close which makes it harder to open& close. It is very old but in great shape with a lovely, consistent semi-gloss finish on bright, heavily figured, solid-wood English oak cabinetry. The workmanship is excellent. This is the piece you want. It's functional, warm, and makes a tall, distinguished statement wherever it is situated. I don't know the exact vintage but am thinking early 20th century. Glass all intact. Hinge-work, articulated armatures for lifting and stowing panel windows is all functional. Even the tiny pulls are figured oak. Fortunately, this antique is completely modular/ stacking(with small dowels for registration at each tier) and can be shipped anywhere in lower 48 safely in six or seven pieces. Antique Globe-Wernicke Elastic Sectional Barrister Bookcase The Globe-Wernicke Company was well known for their line of sectional bookcases. They were called“elastic” because one could just buy whatever was needed at a given time and add sections at any time. One could mix and match different styles and sizes to get exactly the look and functionality needed. The sections were available in different heights to accommodate different sized books. The top. Base and bookcase sections lie one on top of another with no attachment hardware required. This feature also makes it extremely easy to move. What a great idea! This bookcase was bought by my father probably about 80 years ago. But I’m not sure how old it really is; the Universal style came on the market around 1921. It’s been in continual use since then and is in pretty good condition for ... moreits age. There are some nicks and scratches in the finish, primarily on the legs(banging into it with a vacuum cleaner while cleaning underneath) and on the top(knickknacks and other things) There is no water damage and all the section work well. This particular unit is composed of the following items: 1 Ambassador Base Pattern 1867 Grade 3025 ½ 4 Universal Cases Pattern 811 Grade 3025 ½ 1 Ambassador Top Pattern 1861 Grade 3025 ½ The case pattern 811 refers to the inside height of 11” I believe 9” pattern 809) and 13” pattern 813) heights were also available for larger and smaller books. The grade refers to the type of finish. Ambassador and Universal were two of several different styles available. The Ambassador top and base were more elaborate than the Universal ones. Again. One could mix and match to suit one’s décor and budget! The Universal finish types were imitation walnut. Mahogany and oak, with“imitation” meaning veneer. It's made from all solid wood, thankfully; particleboard wasn’t yet invented. I don’t know how to recognize wood types, but I think this one is the mahogany veneer. Up for consideration is a fine Oak Arts Crafts 4 stack barristers or stacking bookcase. The bookcase stands 50 1/2 inches tall by 34 inches wide. Each Stack is labelled with a paper label to the interior. Each Section is stacked on the other and they are different dimensions. The bottom section being 15 inches tall the two center sections being 13 inches tall and the top one being 11 inches. The depth is 11 inches deep and the overall depth at the feet is 12 1/2 inches. The bookcase has a patent date on the door sliding mechanism of 1908. The finish is excellent. It is original dark brown varnish with extra clean interior coloration. A golden oak Globe Wernicke barrister three stack bookcase. It measures 47 1/2" tall. 34" wide, 12" deep. It is stamped Globe Wernicke with patent dates, late 1800's. The glass and hardware are all original. On the inside top back there is a wood roller shade on each cabinet. They come in and out easily. If you want to add fabric, they can be shades again. Its top and base separate from the 4 stack units. The four main pieces can be arranged in any order- I have the drawers second from the top. There are 12 individual drawers in the drawer unit. Four Stack Tiger Oak The Globe-Wernicke Co. Barrister Bookcase with Secretary. Top piece of bookcase in very good condition with very little wear. It is 4" high. Top bookcase has wooden square knob. Glass is original. Inside of bookcase measures 32 1/2" wide x 9 1/2" deep x 9 1/2 high. The label inside reads: The Globe-Wernicke Co. Cincinnati Sectional Bookcase A-C Single D-8 1/2 Pattern Grade 308 = 299 1/2 The second section is the secretary for writing and storage It has a pull down door with keyhole and original key. The pull down writing area is 32" wide by 22" deep. The third section has two dovetailed drawers. Each drawer has a wooden pull handle and measures 15" long x 9" wide in the inside Inside the second bookcase measures 32" wide x 9 1/2" deep x 13 1/4" high.
