Antique rocking chair colonial Sack back windsor rush seat very unusual
This is a fantastic antique colonial rocking chair it came out of an estate in the Boston Nantucket area. The rush seat has been replaced. It is very sturdy and usable. The finish has a great patina see pics 4 and 5. The feature I enjoy the most is the spindle that supports the 2 arms run down to the rocker base. Very nice mid century ladder back chair with rush seat. It has a dark finish on the wood(I am not sure of what type wood) The chair is structurally sound. The rush seat is in very good condition and can be for a very long time to come. Under the front of the seat it is a darker color- probably from years of hands pulling the chair up to a dining table. There is a spot(photo#12) of a pinkish color. A light colored stain pen can probably cover it if it doesn't wash off. It is not very noticeable. Unusual Spindle Back Chair, Old Red Paint w. Gold & Silver Decoration, Rush Seat
We don't list a lot of furniture on eBay. So I'm not sure where to start with this extremely unusual side chair that features turned legs and spindles, with steeple type finials and ornately scroll sawn cross bars at the back. It has a rush seat, and the whole wooden frame is coated in old red paint worn to a brilliant patina bordering on"distressed" and check out all of that decorative paintwork- the gold striping and highlights, and the silver leaf and scroll patterns with birds and cherries on either side of the colorful center medallion of a house in a wooded setting. I have sat on it. But I don't find it very comfy, I think it was primarily intended as a decorative item, besides which the rush seat is partially coming unthreaded, as you can see in the pictures. And take a look at the last picture, which shows the ... morewords"Made in Spain" handwritten on the back leg. Now that I see that, it does bring to mind those old hand painted gypsy caravans that used to dot the roadsides of Europe. I've never seen one like it before. And I've had it for 20 years or more now, and I can't even remember where I got it. The general style is somewhat primitive or colonial, but if it really is of European origin, I'm afraid I'm outside my comfort zone when it comes to dating it or trying to trace its history. As for dimensions. It is about 39" tall, from the floor to the top of the back, and the seat is about 18" off the ground. It is about 17" across at the top of the back, and the seat is about 14" deep and up to 17½" wide. Because we'd rather not get involved in crating this item for shipping. We are advertising it as"local pickup only" and we are in Cornish, Maine. However, if you really want it shipped to distant parts, then e-mail us and we'll see what we can negotiate. A nicely styled old side chair in need of a little TLC. It has no significant damage of any kind. Just minor surface scratches from use, and unraveling of the woven rush seat. An easily refinished/reworked chair, it will look excellent in the corner of any room, as a desk chair or spare dining chair.
