4 19th C. Handmade, Tiger & Birdseye Maple Side Chairs, Excellent Condition
These are four 19th C. slat-back side chairs made from Tiger and Birdseye maple. They appear entirely handmade with no metal fasteners. Handsaw marks and measuring and marking lines are visible on each chair. There is a potential maker's name painted under one seat. But I cannot identify it. The chairs have been expertly refinished, and I suspect that the original canning was removed at that time. The chairs are ~32.25"H, 17.25"W, 19.5"D, with 17" seat heights. They are quite strong with little movement in the joinery. There is some age-appropriate wear, particularly at the feet. One chair has an old, small crack on the right-rear leg, but there is no movement in the crack and I do not believe it requires repair. Please see the pictures. This lot of vintage chairs is real solid wood(not press-board) and they are such a cute way to display your dolls or bears. The largest of the three is a wood& wrought iron rocking chair measuring approximately 14" high. 6 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" deep. The seat area is about 4 1/4" X 4 1/4" It has a somewhat Victorian appearance with the swirls on the back, arms and rockers. The smaller rocking chair is all wood with spindles on the back and lower part below the seat. It measures approximately 8 1/2" high. 4 1/2" wide and 5 3/4 deep. It has a seat area of just slightly under 3" X 3" The lighter colored rocking chair is solid wood with a braided rag type seat~~so sweet with mostly pastel blues. Pinks and some ivory, gingham checks and dots. This combination of fabrics really adds to the old fashioned ... morelook of such a charming little chair. They belonged to my Great Great Grandmother who lived in West Chester. PA. They are 33" ladderbacks with rush/cane seats. The decorative rails are hand turned and the ladderbacks are hand mortised. The decorative turnings on the front legs and rails are unusual.
