Beautiful Victorian Hinks & Sons Ceramic Oil Banquet Lamp, Original Glass Shade
Beautiful Victorian Hinks and Sons Ceramic Oil Banquet Lamp with Original Acid Etched Glass Shade This lovely Victorian oil/kerosene lamp by Hicks and Sons is all original from its base to its duplex burners to its acid etched. Floral design, glass shade. This example of a vintage English banquet lamp has a commanding, and yet quietly elegant, presence. The lamp stands over 23.5" tall by over 6" wide at the base; the piece is quite substantial and heavy probably due to the heavy ceramic, weighted metal base. The naturalistic, calming colors of blue, green, ochre and cream in the ceramic portion(Doulton? complement the quiet elegance of the acid etched floral glass shade. The ceramic base almost has an arabesque design look to it with some elements of aesthetic(nature) movement. As you can see from the photos, some of the ceramic ... moredesign is raised in certain portions of the motif giving it an embossed, three dimensional look. The middle ceramic component is seated on a footed brass base; the oil font sits down in a brass holder seated in the ceramic portion. The lamp is marked by the makers in the following places: on the brass neck near the two wick turners(Hinks and Son's Patent" on the end of the wick turners(Best British Maker F" with what looks like a sun logo in the middle) on the very bottom of the metal base(Hinks and Son's.468" This lamp is in what I consider excellent to very good condition, especially considering its age and utilitarian purpose. The brass footed base has some indications of age such as darkening and pitting; I could find no cracks, no chips and no imperfect areas in the ceramic portion. The only imperfections in this over 100 year old lamp can be attributed to age and use and are the following: several flakes, tiny chips in the glass in the bottom rim of the glass shade; these flakes cannot be seen while the shade is resting in its brass holder. The lamp stands on a ceramic base that bears the impressed mark of Veritas Lamp Works This lovely lamp has a beautifully embossed brass stand section. In an Art Nouveau design, that leads up to a yellow ribbed glass reservoir. On top of this is the working heart of the lamp. This consists of a brass section holding the double wick adjusters, both of which work nicely and come with wicks. Fitting into the top of the brass section is a clear glass chimney and over that is the tulip shaped shade. Two horses, a driver, and the carriage and lady. The piece has lots of character and patina. The top screws off, and one could put the oil inside. Wick is in the mechanism, and works well. Antique Ceramic Oil Lamp Fitting
Old ceramic oil lamp fitting. The top of the ceramic piece measures just over 1 inch and the whole fitting stands approx 2 inches high. The metal wick winding bit measures approx 4 inches and appears to turn quite freely. I have tried to clean this item up but didn't want to overdo it as I don't know anything about it. There is a very small chip to the top rim of the ceramic piece and the winder bit is slightly bent- could probably be straightened by someone who knows what they are doing! Antique Sherwoods small ceramic oil lamp fitting
Unusual ceramic and metal- probably brass oil lamp fitting. This is the bit where the wick emerges from. The ceramic piece measures approx 1 inch across the top and the whole fitting is approx 2 inches high. It is marked on one side"Lynlight No.1 British Make. On the other side there is the Sherwoods Trade Mark- Sherwoods Limited. The winder bit also has the name Sherwoods on it. I have tried to clean it up but didn't want to over clean it. The winder mechanism moves but is a bit sticky and again. Not knowing anything about these things, I didn't want to force it. Up for auction is this heavy'pot' English ceramic oil lamp drop in fount to suit a Duplex size oil lamp. Just over 5 inches tall and 5&1/2 inches max diameter. The diameter under the shoulder where it drops in is 4 inches. The'drop in' section under the shoulder is 3 inches depth. Top collar is 55mm OD. And has a finely tooled series of grooves to give a grip for a brass burner collar to be plastered on. Ideal size for either a Bayonet or Screw Duplex size collar. The ceramic is a higher than usual well fired'stoneware' pale cream in colour. Heavy. Has a good black ceramic base, which is 7 1/2 inches in diameter and which is marked underneath with the number 231. The rose piece is a standard No 10 size. Having a medium thread pattern of 20 t.p.i. and an internal diameter of 23mm. Weight is 1500 grams. Height is 5 1/4 inches.

The vase at the Met is in a very similar(if not identical) turquoise color and also appears to have the same decorative, swirly, raised pattern as on this lamp. We think all will agree that this oil lamp is 1000 times more beautiful than the vase on display at the Met. Don't miss this rare oppurtunity to acquire a superb.
