There's a 2-1/2" movable iron ring resting on a large carved oval orb. The columns are nicely carved with acanthus leaf design. The lower bases are intact. In very good to excellent condition. Some time during the mid 20th Century being reinforced with slide on steel tubing. One of the steel casings has slid down. See pix, it can be left as-is, slid back on or removed though not by me. These pieces are ornate with a few nice details that differentiates them other vintage hitching posts. They measure 4 feet(48 inches) tall. 7 inches wide at widest point, the base is 1.8 feet x 1.65 feet, and the ring is 4 inches around. They weigh approximately 125 pounds each. This is a very nice pair of gilded and fluted walnut posts that were salvaged from an antique or vintage French bed. They each measure aprox. 49 1/2" high x 3 3/4" square near the bottom and are 1 3/4" square at the very top. The applique is made of gesso or some sort of composition material. Separated by a beveled glass mirror(see last photo- this mantle is for reference only and is NOT included in the auction) These columns measure 22-1/4" high overall with 5" diameter at the base. Detailed dimensions as follows(please feel free to ask if I'm not clear about a measurement) base 5" x 5" x 5/8" one only) plinth 1-1/8"H overall(1-1/16" 7/16" plinth lower 5.093"D(16" circumference) plinth upper 4.456"D(10" circumference) cap lower 3.661"D(11-1/2" circumference) cap upper 3.263"D(10-1/4" circumference) cap ring 5/16" column 22-1/4"H overall. flutes 20"H. flutes ... more3.183"D(10" circumference) at top. flutes 3.819"D(12" circumference) at base. flutes 3/16"W x 5/16" between. The columns come in their original finish and patina. Not molested(re-touched or re-finished) in any way. I believe it is shellac(becomes slightly tacky when tested with denatured alcohol) The finish is finely crazed(crackled) in the flutes. There is the occasional small bruise. Most often on the base plinth. There is also one very thin shrinkage/glue crack on each column, running parallel with the flutes. I wouldn't have known they were there, except the finish has slightly darkened and dulled along these cracks. One plinth base is missing, but this could be easily duplicated. Since I've not removed the caps or plinths. I'm not sure whether these columns are solid or hollow. The shrinkage cracks might suggest hollow, whereas the weight(about 6lbs each) suggests solid. VERY NICE PAIR OF SMALL( 19 1/2" HT. MAHOGANY COLUMNS WITH HAND CARVED CAPITALS: The overall condition of this handsome pair of matched columns is very good. There are some small chips on each capital. But with the dark mahogany finish. The chips do not stand out. The tapered shaft has mahogany veneer. The varnish on the veneer has aged to a fine stippled surface. The stippling is very uniform and of a consistent color and texture on both columns. One column does have some abrasions on the shaft and a small chip and surface crack at the bottom. Most of this damage is on one side, allowing it to be placed out of sight on the back when displayed. The hand carved capitals are in a Corinthian style. Each capital has a large raised oval panel at the center of each face. Acanthus leaf carving is draped down from each volute. This is a nice pair of vintage carved pine posts or columns. The carving looks like drapes. They measure 22 1/4" high x 2 3/4" wide x 1 3/8" thick. The post on the right has some damage along one side and back, if you enlarge the pictures it will provide a better view of this area. We will gladly combine lots whenever possible to save on shipping costs.

Antique Vintage Solid Poplar Wood Doric Columns Exterior Weathered Pair 90"
Local p ickup is pref erred. I can also deliver with in 500 miles of 19007( PA) for $1/mile. Please inquire about a delivery estimate before purchase. Due to the size and weight. Freight would be extremely costly but if you would like an estimate I'll just need your zip code. Here is a pair of big old solid poplar columns(not hollow) They are w eathered but in decent conditi on overall. The bottoms were hand cut so they may need planing. Though they do stand easily on their own. These columns are big and heavy, probably about 200 pounds each. They have a very slight taper, about 1" in diameter over 90" of length. These were turned from one tree trunk each, they are not laminated layers. There are c racks and checks on them. And the edge of one of the tops is missing(see pics) Some of the tips of t he radius details have broke ... moreoff. It looks like these were small pieces that were added to complete the curve(see pics) that have since fallen off. There is a little bit of paint on them but not much. These would make a great starting poi nt for a substantial pergola or archway. Or with a bit of repair these could be used on a porch once again. Dimensions are: base trim detail is approx. 13" diameter-base column diameter is approx. 11 1/4" top trim detail is approx. 11 1/2" diameter-top column diameter is approx. 10 1/2" height of both is approx. 90" tall Thanks for lookin g.
