The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve of the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square. Crisp carved details bring elegance to specific elements of this fine sofa: the acanthus carved arm supports or reeded and curled handholds. Dating to the second half of the 19th century, which have been mounted as lamps. The pair of lamps would make a most elegant statement in virtually any room in your house or office. The lamps are predominantly bronze with the base and shaft made of black marble. They include both candelabras' original ornate snuffers. The lamps have been mounted on an ebonized base and fitted with a lighting fixture extending up the back and a brown silk cord. The lamps are pictured and come with two handsome round black fabric shades with gold cord decoration near the top and bottom and gold silk lining. They also come with bronze acorn finials. Up for consideration is a vintage Louis XVI Ram heads lamp with hoofs and marble base. The lamp measures 27 inches. No finial. The lamp has 6 larger sockets.and an on off switch at the base. The very bottom is made of green marble the center of the lamp is terracotta and the upper assembly is a mixture of metals. There probably was a extension from the center not upwards which held a shade. This really is a Neoclassical type lamp. It is very heavy and rather large. It probably had a Mica shade. A very fine pair of antique. Circa 1890's, French Louis XVI style brass candelabra(candelabrum) with five arm sockets and bobeches. There are hand painted porcelain plaques and bodies with cherubs and grouped instruments, faux Sevres. The brass has an ormolu finish, includes two candle snuffers. Missing a brass socket insert to one socket on each candelabra. They measure 23" tall by 8" square at bobeches. Excellent condition: brass without dents or breaks, porcelain without chips or cracks with painting unworn. The pair is for one price.
